He was a pretty prominent lawyer and politician in the history of Cattaraugus County, New York, serving several local offices. He was justice of the peace of Machias in 1836, 1839, 1843, and 1847; town supervisor of Machias in 1837-1840 and 1846; town clerk of Machias in 1842; and county judge of Cattaraugus County in New York in 1847 and 1866. He was also Master and Charter Member of the Ellicottville Lodge, No. 307.
