Biography

Estella Marie Lambert was born on August 29, 1905 in Salisbury Township, Meigs County, Ohio.

Stella did not graduate from High School. She only attended school to the Junior High Level. During class, one day, she was asked to read from a book. She pronounced one of the words incorrectly and the entire class laughed at her. She was so sensitive that she refused to attend school again, begging her father to not have to go back. He did not understand why she wouldn't go back. He told her that he wanted her to finish her schooling, but that he would not insist if she did not want to finish. She never told him what happened.

Stella's life has revolved around bringing her family together. A good deal of this has to do with her Mother leaving her Father and her Children when Stella was 6 years old. Stella said that she remembers her mother running around the house packing all her things and leaving her husband a note. Stella asked her mother, "Mommie, where are you going? What are you doing?" and she said that her Mother replied, "I can't take it anymore". Her mother left and she never saw her again until she was 21 years old. She said that it affected her greatly and that she always grieved the loss of her mother. She always wondered why her mother left them. When she met up with her mother again at age 21, she said that she was never able to ask her mother why, because it was emotionally too much for Stella to ask. She cried hard at her Mother's grave every year and said that she regretted not being strong enough to ask her mother why. Now, she said, she would never know.

Stella was very close to her brother Ira, she said because of her mother's loss. When Ira was visiting their Grandmother, in Detroit, Michigan, Grandma Frashier (Orlena (Yeaugher) Frashier) he developed Pneumonia, and became gravely ill. They called Stella and Grandma Beck (Carrie Frashier) to come. Grandma Beck went immediately, but Stella was unable to because she was ill and had just given birth to her son, Marion. She said that she really cried hard when she found out that her brother, Ira had passed away and she couldn't be there by his side.

Stella was a very hard working woman. When her husband was unable to work, she worked in Columbus, Ohio at the "Deshler Walick", (which became the "Deshler Hilton Hotel" later on. She was a hostess. Stella's first job in Columbus, Ohio was at the Shoe Factory; but, when she came home from the first day on the job she cried and cried because she said that she couldn't take it. She said that the Shoe Factory job didn't last long, and that she almost had a "nervous breakdown" over that job.

Stella was very religious and became a Sunday School Teacher at her Methodist Church. She taught the Adult Class for many years. She enjoyed being a part of this. She was very prayerful and Christian. When living in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, she was a member of their Redeemer United Methodist Church.

In 1977, when Stella and her daughter Helen were crossing the street, during a shopping trip at Lazarus, Columbus, Ohio, they were hit by an automobile. An older man, hit them while they were walking in the cross walk. He said that he didn't see them. Stella had to be taken to the hospital for broken ribs and pelvis. She recovered from this.

Stella slowly lost her sight from arteriosclerosis over time. She had a mild stroke and began to suffer from congestive heart failure.

Stella died at her daughter's home, early in the morning, in her sleep, from the cumulative effects of congestive heart failure. [Teresa Herrmann]
