Henry Harrison Lancaster was born 26 October 1843 in Hall, Georgia, the son of John Hartwell Lancaster (1804-1864) and Hannah Harriett Diskell (1803 GA-1881). Henry served both sides during the Civil War. Henry was a “Galvanized Yankee.” He first enlisted in the CSA, was captured and held in a Union prison. CSA prisoners were sometimes given the opportunity to leave prison to serve the Union in the Indian Wars in the West. Henry took this opportunity, and survived service in both armies. Henry married Cynthia Ann Lewis. He died, age 75, in Sterling, Oklahoma on 14 October 1919, and is buried with his wife Cynthia at Massieville Cemetery, Massieville, Oklahoma. NOTE: FindAGrave’s basic data shows his birthplace as Hall county, GA, but the text in the bio says that his Army enlistment papaers show that he was born in Jackson county, Georgia, near Athens, and adjacent to Hall county. The household included John Lancaster, 46, born in North Carolina, a farmer, with $250 in real estate; his wife, Hannah H., 47, born in Georgia; and their eleven children, all born in Georgia: John T., 24, a laborer; Margaret E., 22; Mary F., 18; William R., 16, laborer; Sarah T., 15; Martha J., 13; Noah W., 10; Rebecca, 8, in school; Henry H., 6, in school; James W., 5; and Hannah, 3.[2]
In 1860, the Lancaster family lived in Randolph, Jackson, Georgia. The household included John Lancaster, 56, born in North Carolina, a farmer with $1200 in real estate and $775 in personal estate; his wife Hannah, 57, born in Georgia; and their five children, all born in Georgia: Jane, 22; Webb, 21, a farm laborer, could not read or write; Henry, 16, farm laborer; James, 14; and Hannah, 12, in school.[3]
Henry H. Lancaster and Cynthia Ann Lewis were married. They lived with her parents in 1870.
In 1870, the Lewis family lived in Collin, Texas. All members of the household were born in Kentucky, except as noted. Those who could read and write are noted. The household included James Lewis, 41, a farm laborer, with $1800 in personal assets; his wife Prudence, 43; their eight children, Thomas, 18, farm laborer; Sarah, 16; James, 14, farm laborer; Simon, 12, farm laborer; Andrew, 11, farm laborer; Jane, 10; William, 8; Daniel, 5; and Cynthia (Lewis) Lancaster, 21. Also, Cynthia’s husband, Henry Lancaster, 26, born in Georgia, a carpenter, could read and write, with $150 in personal estate; and their children, Rosa, 4; and Ann, 1, born in Texas. Also living with them was David Smith, 22, born in Massachusetts, a stone mason, who could read and write.[4]
In 1900, the Lancaster family lived on their rented farm in Marlow, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory. The household included Henry H. Lancaster, born in Georgia in October 1843 (father b. NC; mother b. GA), a farmer, who could read and write; his wife of 32 years, Susan (Cynthia), 51, b. March 1849 in Kentucky (parents b. KY), could not read or write, and who had had eight children, six of whom were living; their son, Luther, 20, b. September 1880 in Georgia, a farm laborer, who could not read or write.[5]
In 1910, the Lancasters lived in Brown, Oklahoma. Henry H. Lancaster, 66, born in Georgia (father b. NC; mother b. GA), a teamster/freight hauler, owned their house free and clear. His wife, Cynthia A., 59, born in Kentucky (parents b. KY), had had nine children, six of whom were living. They had been married for 42 years (first marriage for Henry; second marriage for Cynthia). They both could read and write. [6]
Henry served in the Union Army, as a Corporal in Co I, 5th US Volunteer Infantry. After his death in 1919, his wife Cynthia, of Rt. 2, Box 35, Rush Springs, Oklahoma, became the beneficiary of his Veteran’s Pension.[7]

In 1932, an application for a Soldiers Headstone was made for Civil War pensioner Henry H. Lancaster, who died 14 October 1919, and was buried in Sterling, Oklahoma. He served as a Corporal with Co. I, 5th Regiment, US Volunteer Infantry. The headstone was shipped on 20 August 1932 to applicant Wiley N. Kelly, RFD 2, Rush Springs, Elgin, Oklahoma.
