A distinguished academic: Initially starting an economics course with the aim of becoming an actuary (his mother's idea), he entered medicine and served as a pathologist for the Army in the second world war. This led him to return to mathematics, which is how he came to make significant contributions in the area of statistics used in medicine. There is a lot of information about his professional career on the internet, but unfortunately much of them are on "pay per view" sites. See however http://www.science.usyd.edu.au/about_us/fame_lancaster.shtml for example. I can provide copies non-commercially of the very good article from Historical Records of Australian Science, 2004.
