Biography

Reverend Canon[1] James Lancaster was the son of Thomas Lancaster. [2]

He was from Fort William. [3]

In 1834 he was a church clerk. [3]

In 1837 he was "Registrar, James Lancaster Esq, Fort William, Ballinasloe". [4]

In 1840 he was of Tuam. [5]

"The Irish Missionary College was established in 1846 in Portnick, Ballinasloe for the purposes of instructing Church of Ireland clergy in the Irish language with the intention of proselytising to the Irish masses that could not speak English. ‘It had been founded by Rev. James Lancaster, secretary of the Connaught Auxiliary of the Irish Society to train clergymen in the Irish language’." [6]

He married Anne O'Hara, Galway 1856. [7]

In 1862 he was a clerk at The Vicarage, Inistiogue, County Kilkenny, Ireland. [2]

In 1876 he was rector of Altany, Durrow, Queen's County. [8]

James died before the 1901 census, where his wife is recorded as a widow.
