Biography

William J. Lancaster or Pennington was born about 1858 in Ashton^[1] or Haydock^[2] or St Helens,^[3][4] Lancashire, England.

While he is listed as William James Pennington in most records, he is clearly listed as William J Lancaster in the 1871 census. It is possible that he was born as William James Lancaster, but his mother then married or remarried to James Pennington, and he generally took on his adoptive father's surname. A possible birth record is for William James Lancaster, birth registered in Jul-Sep 1857 in Wigan district, Lancashire.^[5]

In the 1861 England census, William Pennington was living with his parents James and Jane Pennington in St Helens, Lancashire, England. He was born about 1858 in Ashton.^[1]

In the 1871 England census, he was living with James and Jane Pennington and siblings in Sutton, Lancashire. However he was named as William J. Lancaster in the census record, born in 1858 in Haydock, Lancashire.^[2]

In the 1881 England census, at age 23, he was not listed with his parents James and Jane Pennington and siblings in their census record. (Note that there is an 1881 census record in Kirkdale, Lancashire for a Will Pinnington, born 1857, with parents James and Jane Pinnington; which is not this Will.)

Possible record: William Pennington married Alice Leather on 21 May 1882 in Sutton, Lancaster, England. The marriage record indicates that he was 24, so born about 1858, and his father was James Pennington.^[6]

In the 1891 census, William Pennington (born about 1858 in St Helens) was married to Alice Pennington (34) and living in St Helens, Windle, Lancashire, with children Esther (12), William (8), Elizabeth (4) and Arthur (1). He was working in a brewery.^[3]

A possible record for in the 1901 census is William James Benington [Pennington] (born about 1858 in St Helens), who was married to Alice Benington (44) and living in St Helens with their children Esther (22), Eliza (14), Arthur (11), Alice (8) and Ada (5).^[4]

A possible record for his death, by name birth date and place, is William James Pennington, born about 1858, died in 1902 in Apr-May-Jun in Prescott, Lancashire, England.^[7]
