His son Bernard fitz Gilbert was succeeded by his sister and heiress Christian.
His daughter Christian de Stainton (d. before 1220) m. Michael II le Fleming, and their son Anselm referred to his uncle (avunculus) named Bernard de Staynton.
Gilbert is often proposed to be a de Lancaster. The evidence used to make various proposals about him is unclear.
Frederick Lewis Weis described him as an illegitimate son William II de Lancaster.[1] But although William II de Lancaster did have an illegitimate son of that name this Gilbert de Lancaster is known to have been lord of Sockbridge, where he founded a long lasting line of Lancasters. He was apparently living after Gilbert de Stainton, and his son and son-in-law were all dead.
However Weis cited The early history of the Stricklands of Sizergh for this information, and that books actually proposed that Gilbert was brother of William de Lancaster II's father, William de Lancaster I, making his father also a Gilbert.[2]
This is two generations earlier than Weis says, and there is no mention of illegitimacy.
