"Wilkinson Lane son of said persons [Samuel & Jane Lane], was born Apr'l 21st 1743" in St John's and St George's parish, Joppa, then Baltimore County, Maryland. [3]
"Sarah Lane, daughter of Sam'l & Jane, his wife, was born Nov. 8th 1746" in St John's and St George's parish, Joppa, then Baltimore County, Maryland. [3]
"Tradition in two branches of the Lane family hold that Samuel and Jane Lane returned to England from about 1736 to about 1743. During this period, the family of Samuel's great uncle, Thomas Lane, still resided in the British Isles. Supporting this idea is that the Lanes disappear from Maryland records for these years, and there are family claims that their sons Lambert Lane and Richard Lane were born in England during this six-year period."[6]
Samuel Lane owned land northwest of Baltimore city, including Level Bottom, Crosses Lot, Lane’s Bottoms and Hills, Miller’s Gain, and Gills’ Prospect. In 1757 he sold the first three and in 1761 bought the other two from John Gills. (Barnes states that he bought Level Bottom and Cross's Lot in 1756, and sold portions of these in 1757.[1]) In 1779 Miller’s Gain was deeded to his son John of Baltimore County [Maryland], and Gills’ Prospect to Joseph Hays, husband of his daughter Sarah.
Samuel Lane moved to Pennsylvania, possibly to be near son Samuel.
There is no evidence documenting Samuel’s death date. The last record of Samuel is in 1779 when he deeded “Miller’s Gain” to his son John. Therefore the best estimate is that he died in or after 1779, likely in Pennsylvania.[1]
Research Notes
This Samuel Lane is sometimes confused with Samuel Lane, born 1699, died in 1771 and buried in Evansburg, Pennsylvania.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Samuel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Samuel:
This profile is presently mixing information from three different Samuel Lanes. One born Maryland, son of Rev Dutton Lane, and who died on or after 1779 probably around Bedford Pennsylvania. Not a Reverend.
His son, Reverend Samuel Lane, who lived in Bedford, Pennsylvania.
Another Samuel Lane, son of Edward Lane, who died 1771 and was buried in veterans cemetery at Evansburg, Pennsylvania.
I propose to create a separate profile for the latter and separate out the information with that Samuel.
NOTE: Edits were made to profile per above proposal.
There is no evidence documenting Samuels death date. The last record of Samuel is in 1779 when he deeded Millers Gain to his son John, who had remained behind in Baltimore County. At the time, Samuel also deeded Gills Prospect to his son-in-law, Joseph Hayes.
It is possible those land transactions may have occurred shortly before his death. I recommend using After 1799 as the best option.
