Biography

“Mr. Lane was the mayor of Cartersville who fined himself in his own court some years ago for disorder on the streets of the town.” Wouldn’t you like to know the rest of that story? He was undoubtedly an interesting character. The notice of his death [1] also said that he was a one-armed Confederate veteran with a splendid record as a soldier and that he died as a result of an accident: “He was rubbing his rheumatic joints with gasoline and kerosene oil by the stove in his home and the gasoline caught fire. He was burned so badly that he died during the night.” He was 72 years old.

Stephen S. Lane was indeed a Confederate veteran. He served as a private in Company B of the 2nd North Carolina Artillery, C.S.A. [2] from July 1862–May 1864. The North Carolina 2nd Artillery Regiment (aka The 36th Regiment Volunteers; aka The Cape Fear Regiment).[3] He was called "Captain Lane," but this was likely a courtesy honorific and not an indication of actual military rank[4].

Stephen Lane is buried in the Cartersville cemetery in Florence County, South Carolina alongside his wife Lincy Hursey Lane.
