Biography

  • Harriet was the youngest of seven living children, although there was an infant brother born after her that died young.
  • She was born in Mercersburg, Franklin County, Pennsylvania, 9 February 1830
  • Her Uncle, President James Buchanan was her guardian when she was orphaned at the age of 1l.
  • Harriet was known as " Hal" and she was educated in boarding schools throughout her adolescence, with one of them The Convent of the Vistation Nuns in Washington, DC.
  • When her Uncle, Bachelor James Buchanan became President, she served as the hostess, or "First Lady" of the White House.[1].

Marriage, Children and Charity

  • Harriet married Henry Elliott Johnston, a Baltimore Banker, when she was 36 years old. The ceremony was held at James Buchanan's residence, "Wheatland", in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
  • Two sons were born to the marriage:
  • James Buchanan Johnston b. November 1866 (died March 1881)
  • Henry Eliot Johnston, Jr. b. November 1866 (died October 1882)
  • Both sons died of rheumatic fever.
  • After the death of her husband, she devoted the her life and endowments to charitable works. One of those Charities, The Harriet Lane Home for Invalid Children eventually became an annex of the John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, New York.
