Biography

Elizabeth Ann Langley was the daughter of Wiley and Sarah Langley. I'm told Wiley and Sarah were married 9 Jun 1809 in Johnson County, GA. I haven't verified this information and I know it's a little off because Johnson County wasn't formed until the 1840s or 1850s. I'm not sure which of the counties that eventually formed Johnson would have the marriage record.
In any event, Wiley Langley was born in Caswell County, NC and was the son of Thomas and Mary (Wiley) Langley. Thomas died around 1803 because his estate sale took place on 18 Aug 1803. Wiley was underage at the time because an 1807 entry says "Wiley Langley received of Thomas Wiley guardian 164 lbs. in full his part of the estate of Thomas Langley, dec'd. 23 Sep 1806. Testator Joseph Langley. The 164 lbs would probably have been tobacco.
There is an 1823 Caswell County will for Mary Langley. I haven't seen this document, but I'm assuming it is Wiley's mother.
Some of Wiley's older siblings and uncles went to GA, and that is how he ended up there. From GA he went to MO. I know his brother, Moses, went with him to MO.
Brother Moses died in 1846 in Moniteau County and Thomas Langley, son of Wiley, provided an affidavit to the court which stated that Joseph Langley (NC), Mary Brandon (GA) and Wiley Langley (MO) were the heirs of Moses. All were his siblings.
Wiley, Elizabeth Ann's father, died in 1854 in Moniteau County. I have also have his probate papers. Per these papers, "the heirs of the said deceased are Sarah Langley, widow, who resides in Moniteau County, MO, Polly Collet who resides in Barton County State of Arkansas, and two minor heirs of Thomas Langley, decd whose names are unknown to me who I believe reside in Carroll County, MO and Sarah Brown, Moses Langley, and Elizabeth Ann Langley all of whom reside in Moniteau County, MO..." (Henry Collet was one of the administrators of brother Moses Langley's estate - it may have been Henry or his son who married Wiley's daughter, Polly. There isn't a Moniteau County record of this marriage, so I don't have a first name for Mr. Collet.)
The Thomas Langley mentioned in Wiley's will was his son who provided the heir information to the court when Moses died. Thomas died in 1847 and left a widow, Margaret, and two minor children, Margaret Jane Langley and John Wiley Langley. (There is a Moniteau marriage between Margaret Langley and Jacob R. Houx on 7 Sep 1852 in Moniteau County. I don't know if this was Thomas's widow or daughter. I suspect is was his widow as Jacob R. Houx was one of the appraisers of Thomas's estate.)
John Wiley Langley, minor heir of Thomas Langley and an heir to Wiley Langley's estate, filed a petition in the probate court of Livingston County, MO on 11 March 1867, to wit:
"John W. Langley a minor over the age of fourteen years presents a petition for the appointment of a Guardian and Curator, and makes choice of William H. Vincent. It is therefore ordered that the said William H. Vincent be and he is hereby appointed Guardian and Curator of the person & Estate of the said John W. Langley minor."
Perhaps John didn't care for his stepfather.....
Based on the probate records, these are the children of Wiley and Sarah Langley (not sure about birth order):
  1. Thomas: Married Margaret Maupin in Cole County, MO on 25 Feb 1841 and died 1847. Two children - Margaret Jane Langley and John Wiley Langley.
  2. Polly: Married Mr. Collet and living in Barton County, AR in 1854. Don't know about children.
  3. Sarah Langley: Married Nelson Brown 23 Jan 1854 in Moniteau County. Don't know about children.
  4. Moses Langley (b. 16 Dec 1816): Married Mary (Polly) Hightower 8 Apr 1841 in Cole County. Three children: Thomas W. Langley, who married Malissa (Maud) C. Lawson on 9 Sep 1876 in Moniteau County, and Nancy Jane Langley. Thomas and Maud did not have children, and Nancy Jane never married. The third child was a son, Jesse W., who died in infancy.
  5. Elizabeth Ann Langley who married John Armitage on 18 Feb 1858 in Moniteau County.
There is a third Moses Langley in the area who died (I think) in the 1820s in Callaway County. He is believed to be the uncle of Moses and Wiley and the brother of Thomas. You need a scorecard to keep the Moses Langleys straight....
Mary (Polly) Hightower Langley was my gr gr grandmother's sister. There was another sister, Nancy Jane, who married Richard Corn in Patrick County and then moved to Cole/Moniteau where they had two sons, Samuel Thomas Corn and John William Corn. Nancy Jane and Richard both died between 1840 and 1850 and Moses and Polly Langley took in and raised the Corn boys. Samuel died during the Civil War, and John married Sarah Ratcliff from Morgan County. They settled in Linn County, KS.
I'm told by a descendant of the Callaway County Moses line that there was a cholera epidemic in the area in the late 1840s that really took it's toll on Langleys. The Callaway group had 10 children and only 4 lived past 1850. In Cole/Moniteau, Moses Langley died in 1846, Thomas in 1847, and the Hightowers lost a son, daughter and daughter-in-law between 1840 and 1850.
