As a person with 350 years of French-Canadian heritage, I can tell you that that is a false statement. While maiden surnames are noted in LEGAL documents, married women are always referred to by their husband's surname.

Through literature and television, most people are familiar with the difference between Mademoiselle and Madame which defines a woman's married status. I always heard my mother called by my father's surname, even after his death.
