This Clara is presumed to be Clara Morris (Lapham) Cannon (1847-1909) by her descendants who believe her to be a niece of SImon's, and Simon to be the son of Alexander Hamilton Lapham - none of which is documented.
A few families down, on the next page is George A Jett his wife Mary, two Jett children, two Cooms children and one Zeller.
The 1870 census for Marietta, Washington, Ohio lists:
Simon Southern Lappham(sic) & Mary Cole Jett are listed as the parents of Jessie Fremont Taylor, who was born 09 Jun 1861 in Ohio, and died 06 Apr 1924 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. Jessie's husband was Samuel George Taylor. [7]
Simeon S. Lapham (sic, stone pictured reads 'S.S.Lapham') was born 30 Aug 1817 in Clinton, Oneida County, New York, and died 31 Jan 1908 (aged 90) in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio. He was buried in the Beckett Family Cemetery in Waterford, Washington County, Ohio.
"Son of Nathaniel Lapham and Hannah Mowry. He married Mary C. Jett."
A tree at Family Search lists a source as a gravestone on the Beckett Farm near Marrietta Ohio. Genealogy Trails has a page:
"BECKETT CEMETERY, WASHINGTON COUNTY, OHIO"
Source: "Washington County, Ohio Cemeteries, 1789-1940," by Helen Hill Sloan, published 1964; transcribed by Genealogy Trails Transcription Team
"Beckett Cemetery is about six miles from Waterford, on the river road. It is located on the old Beckett farm. No public road is open to the cemetery."
Joseph H Lapham's death record lists his parents as Simon Lapham & Mary Jett. [10]
Owen T Lapham's death record lists Simon Lapham and Miss Mary Jett. The informant was RS Lapham Owen's son.[11]
There is some doubt that this Simon, and not another, was the son of Nathaniel & Hannah. despite the statement at FIndagrave. There is a SImon associated with the Alexander Hamilton Lapham (1789-1869) branch who is believed by some members of that family to have been one of the "four small children " Polly Sweet Lapham states were deserted by her husband 'Hamilton Lapham' in 1818 in Ohio. It is a very convoluted trail from New York to Ohio to Kentucky to Georgia and back to Ohio that involves parents dying young and children taken in by relatives, thus confusing the record of whose children they were; second or third or fourth marriages without benefit of divorce...
This Simon is frequently referred to as "Simon Southern" which may be an attempt to distinguish him from a different Simon, possibly son of Nathaniel. This is a trail I have worked on off and on for a couple of years, JLO

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Simon by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Simon:
I'm working on connecting this family to the Lapham tree. If anybody can help let me know.
I think his parents were Nathaniel & Hannah (Mowry) Lapham & from census lists I think his children included Joseph, Owen, Luther, Zena, Jeremiah, Mary, Ida & Jessie. A Clara shows up also who probably was a relative taken in after her parents died & not a daughter. It's a long & convoluted story.
Nov 2022 - I'm marking the parents uncertain, see research notes.
