Biography

Birth
Samuel was born in 1766 based on his age in the 1850 census which gives his birthplace as "Virginia". The History of Tuscarawas County cited below gives his death as 1832 age 87 making his birthdate about 1745 (seen in many family trees) however this death date is contradicted by his appearance in the 1850 US census.

His parents are not known - the History of Tuscarawas County says that his father was "of Irish extraction, lived in New Jersey and participated in the Revolutionary struggle". [1]

Marriage
No marriage record has been found. The History of Tuscarawas County indicates his wife was Nancy Gary. As their oldest son Isaac was born Jan 1798, they would have been married about 1796 probably in Pennsylvania.

Info about their children will be included in a future update of this profile.

Life
5 Oct 1798 Samuel Lappin resided in Washington, Fayette County, Ohio within the 2d assessment district of the Ninth Division in the State of Pennsylvania. Occupant: Lappin, Samuel; Owner: Israel Shreeves, 1 Cabbin dimensions 20 by 18, 1 dwelling house value $10, adjoining Joseph Sayers & others, 100 acres $700 value by Assistant Assessor, $700 value by the Principal Assessor. [2]

The owner of the "cabbin" was Israel Shreve (1739-1799).

1800 Samuel Lappin appears on the 1800 US Census residing in Washington, Fayette County, PA. "1M 26-44 [Samuel age 34], 1F 26-44 [wife Nancy], 1F <10 [Sarah 1], 2M <10 [Isaac 2, Samuel newborn]" [3] He is also listed on the Pennsylvania, Septennial Census, 1800 as a resident of Washington township.

In 1801 Samuel resided in Fayette County, Pennsylvania at the birth of his son "...Israel Shreve Lappin … was born May 5, 1801, in Fayette County, Penn.; son of Samuel and Nancy (Gary) Lappin." [4]

18 Jun 1805, Samuel Lappin settled in the north part of Finley McGrew survey [Warren township, Tuscarawas County, Ohio] arriving with family 18 Jun 1805. “Mr. Lappin remained upon this farm through life, and died at the age of eighty-seven years, leaving a family of five children. Both he and his wife, Nancy, were members of the Methodist Church.” [5]

1831 his wife Nancy Gary Lappin died "[Israel Shreve Lappin's] mother died May 29, 1831; his father, October 6, 1832, in his eighty seventh year. They were honest, industrious people, and had the respect of the best society of Tuscarawas County. [6]

1840 Samuel Lappin is not listed in the US census of Tuscarawas County, however listed with Isaac Lappin is a 70-79 year old man which is probably Samuel. "Isaac Lappin 1M 40-49 [Israel 42], 1M 70-79 [father Samuel age 74], 2 F 40-49 [wife Eve, ?], 1M 10-14, 2F 5-9; 7 total." [7]

1850 Samuel Lappin age 84 resided Fairfield, Tuscarawas, Ohio, USA. He lived with his son Isaac Lappin and his family according to the US Census. His age is given as 84 making his birthdate 1766. [8]

Death
He died in Tuscarawas County about 1852 according to a Sons of the American Revolution application. See Disputed Origins below for a discussion of his death date.

No grave has been found for him As he was living with son Isaac in Fairfield township in 1850 and Isaac still lived there in 1860, it's reasonable to assume he died in Fairfield as well.

Disputed Origins

The US Census of 1850 says his birthplace was Virginia about 1766 based on his age of 84. The History of Tuscarawas County indicates his father was in NJ during the time of the Revolution (1776-1783).

The History of Tuscarawas County gives his wife's name as Nancy Gary but no marriage record has been found.

In the History of Tuscarawas County, his death is given as 6 Oct 1832 "age eighty-seven" and this is what is included in many family trees. [9] This date is contradicted by his presence in the 1850 census. It's possible a written record of 1852 was mis-transcribed as 1832. It's also somewhat unreasonable to assume his age at death is accurate when we assume his death date is not, however
