Biography

Patrick Larkin was born in Kilbeacanty parish, Galway, Ireland, between 1814-1817. He was the son of Peter Larkin (abt.1789-1879) and his wife, Bridget (Cunningham) Larkin (abt.1792-abt.1851). At the age of 3, his father was convicted of a crime, sentenced and transported to New South Wales.

In 1826, whilst residing at Bolovan near Ballyturin in Kilbeacanty parish, Ireland, the family received notification from Rev. Father Michael O'Shaughnessey that Peter Larkin had made application to the British government to transport his family from Ireland to New South Wales, Australia.

The family travelled overland south to Cork, Ireland, where they embarked on the convict transport "Brothers (2)" which was carrying a complement of female convicts and five families of convicts, which left Cork on the 3rd October 1826. Aboard were Bridget Larkin: 35 years old, and her 4 children; Bridget: 14 years, Martin: 11 years, Patrick: 10 years and Catherine: 8 years. They arrived in Sydney, NSW, Australia, on the 2nd February 1827.

Patrick Larkin grew up on the family farm, "Galway Farm" in New South Wales, Australia. In an Indenture dated 22 December 1853 Peter Larkin made a Deed of Gift to his son Patrick Larkin for 64 acres at "Galway Farm". On 14th March 1885, Patrick and his wife, Ann (Bradley) Larkin (abt.1816-1886), gave the 64 acres to their son: James Larkin of Charters Towers, also by Deed of Gift.

Patrick Larkin lived the last two years of his life with his nephew John at the request of his son James, who made this a condition of the sale of the land to John Larkin in 1887.

Patrick Larkin died at 'Galway Farm' and was buried the following day alongside his late wife in the Catholic Cemetery, West Dapto, NSW, Australia. [1]
