Biography

Edward was born about 1668 at Westerly, Washington, RI. [1]and died before 26 March at 1741 Westerly, Washington, RI. [2][3]

Edward married 1st about 1698 Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Hall, Sen. Mary was the daughter of Nicholas3 Cottrell and granddaughter of Nicholas and Em (Peabody) Cottrell. [5][6]He is on list of freemen 1655, was rep. 1663, was a free inhabitant of Westerly 1669.

When Edward2 Larkin sold his father's rights in the Voluntown land to Nathaniel Gallup of Stonington on 3 March 1721/2 for £10, he described it as '...all ye whole right that was my Honoured Father's volunteer right and proprietorship which was granted by the ...General Assembly to the volunteers and my sd Father being one of ye sd volunteers. [7]

On 30 May 1689 Edward Larkin was admitted freeman by the Town Council.[8] He received a grant of 100 acres of land from the town on 28 March 1692, 'falling by lot in Number 33 Being the 16th lot on the North side of the great river.'[9] Edward and his wife Elizabeth sold this property on 3 December 1702 to Samuel lewis, 'it being at the southwest corner of John [?W-illegible] Lott.'...

11 March 1693/4 Edward's cattle and brand marks were registered.[10] In 1697 he began to take an active part in Town and colony affairs. He was chosen Town Sergeant that year and again in 1698 and 1699.

At a Town Meeting held at his brother Roger Larkin's house in August 1699, Edward was chosen Second Deputy to attend the General Assembly; he was chosen again in 1702, 1705, 1707 and 1715. [11]

He was among the men chosen to survey the bounds of the town in 1703.[12]He served as a petty juryman in 1704, 1705 and 1706, and was a grand juryman nine times between 1714 and 1735.[13]

The Reverend James MacSparran, pastor of St. Paul's Narragansett, organized an Anglican Church at Westerly in 1727. Edward Larkin was among the subscribers...

Edward Larkin had many land transactions; over forty are found in Westerly records. He acquired over 2,500 acres in Westerly, which included present-day towns of Hopkinton, Charlestown, and Richmond. His homestead farm was part of a block of 650 acres lying in the original Misquamicut Purchase...".

Edward2 Larkin on 16 February 1719 gave to his son Edward Jr. 186 acres taken from his 650 acres in Westerly:

His will is dated 17 November 1737 and proved on 30 March 1741 in Westerly, Rhode Island.[14] His inventory was taken on the 26 March 1741.[14]

Looking at Charlestown records, Edward Larkin of Charlestown married Mary Walker and stayed in Charlestown. I think the Rhode Island line is separate (see the attached unmerged match).

If you agree, two possible solutions: update this profile with the Charlestown info, and move/merge the current wife/son. OR detach edward from parents and merge with the unmerged match and I'll create a new profile for Edward of Charlestown.

Thoughts?

Edward of Rhode Island & Edward of Massachusetts are certainly NOT the same person!! Please do not connect these two families further! The info is already muddled badly enough. Old, non-VR LDS records show a number of errors, so please don't use them, alone, as sources. Please... -- April (Larkin) King

April, if they are incorrectly connected - they need to be disconnected into accurate lines.

Sigh...

I am not very good at this! I've messed up a merge on another family that took me forever to fix. I don't have any solid ideas about the Massachusetts family, but the RI family is pretty/very well researched and published in Elizabeth B Larkin's book. My line goes straight back to Edward of RI (actually 2 lines early on). -- April

What's the title of the book? I couldn't find it in Worldcat. If I have a place to start, I can probably untangle them.

great. I also see that the info from the book is in the other Edward profile. I've asked that this Edward be disconnected from the parents so he can be merged. I'll add a disambiguation/disputed parents section to help make sure there isn't further mixup. (Hopefully).

Larkin-1339 and Larkin-269 are not ready to be merged because: Merge of fathers and determination of which is correct mother is necessary before a merge can proceed. Acceptable otherwise.

Larkin-1339 and Larkin-361 appear to represent the same person because: they have the same wife and approximate dates of birth and death.

Larkin-1339 appears to be a duplicate. Relationship names match dates are close

this appears to be a duplicate of Larkin-361

Larkin-486 and Larkin-269 appear to represent the same person because: Same date of birth, death date may need to be examined more closely. Same parents and siblings, another part of merges needed after clearing up father.

Larkin-845 and Larkin-269 appear to represent the same person because: while birth is different, death is exactly the same
