Jonas was the son of Lars Johan Ritz and his first wife. Jonas's mother died soon after his birth and Jonas lived as a foster son with his maternal uncle until 1864. That year, Jonas joined his father, who had remarried. In November 1869, Jonas moved to Mellby to work as a farm hand at Kongstorp. He returned to Skede in November the following year. In 1874, he married and moved to Brunshult Södregård in Skede parish, where he took over ownership after his father-in-law. Jonas and his wife had five children, one of whom died in infancy. In 1890, Jonas and his wife tragically lost two of their children, 14 year old Hulda and 9 year old Carl, to measles in the span of two days. In 1911, the family moved to Alsheda. In 1913, they moved back to Skede, to Ödebillstorp.
