Biography
Margaret was the daughter and heir of Roger Lascelles of Escrick, Yorkshire, and Barbon, Westmorland, and his wife Eleanor.[1][2][3]
Her first husband was James Pickering of Killlington, Westmorland, and Ellerton, Yorkshire. He predeceased his father James Pickering, who died in December 1460. Margaret, as a widow, asked for relief in 1461 for herself and her seven children, including her son James, the minor heir to his grandfather.[4]The names of only two of their children are known: James and John.[5][6]
Margaret later married Geoffrey Fraunke or Franke. They were married before February 1482, when they made a fine regarding her properties in Yorkshire and Westmorland.[7]
According to her Inquisition Post Mortem, she died 17 November 1499. Her heir was her grandson Christopher Pickering, age 15 and more, son of her son James Pickering.[8]
Research Notes
Inaccurate pedigrees for Lassells or Lascelles of Escrick appear in two publications, Visitations of the north. Part 3. A visitation of the north of England circa 1480-1500[9] and Visitations of the north. Part 4. Visitations of Yorkshire and Northumberland in A.D. 1575, and a book of arms from Ashmole ms. no. 834.[10] These pedigrees are the source of the parents Robert Lascelles and Catherine Grey previously listed on her profile.
Postings regarding the errors and the correct pedigree were made on soc.genealogy.medieval by John P. Ravilious in 2009[11] and John Watson in 2017.[12]
