Biography

Chilton Latham, the son of Robert Latham and Susannah Winslow, was named after his mother's grandfather, James Chilton, a passenger on the Mayflower.[1] Chilton was probably born in Bridgewater circa 1672.[2] Chilton was the great grandson of Mayflower passenger James Chilton through his mother Susannah Winslow.[2]

Chilton married Susanna Kingman, the daughter of John Kingman, at Lowell, Massachusetts, in 1699.[3][2]

Chilton died at Bridgewater in 1751. Susanna, his wife, also died there in 1776, at the age of 97.[4] Chilton is buried in the Old Graveyard in East Bridgewater, Plymouth County, Massachusetts, USA, Plot: Section B Grave #243.[5]

Probate

Chilton died testate and on 7 October 1751, his widow Susannah was granted the administration of his estate.[6]

Apparently, a will was found, dated 13 June 1748, and proved on 2 March 1752 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Susannah and his children, Charles Latham, James Latham, Robert Latham, Joseph Latham, Susannah Wade, wife of Thomas Wade, and Mary Allen, wife of Jonathan Allen of Bridgewater, and his grandchildren, Nehemiah Latham, Jean Latham. His son Robert was appointed executor of the will.[7]

His inventory was taken on 8 July 1752 in Bridgewater. It included an enslaved black girl named Dina.[8]

In 1752, an account of his estate was recorded, included in it was a charge for "gravestones".[9]
