Alexander McLaughlin was born in 1784. The name started out as McLaughlin. Variations of the surname have included: McGlaughlin, McGlothin, Laughland, Laughin, Loflin, Loftlin, Laughland, etc.

AlexanderLaughlin married first to a Massengale; then he married Lucinda Menefee in Elkton, Giles County, Tennessee on 8 Mar 1810. Theirs was the first marriage performed in the newly formed county of Giles County, Tennessee by the first circuit court clerk, German Lester.[2] A trip made to the Old Records Department at the Court House in Elkton, Giles County reveals that due to the burning of the Court House during the War Between the States that no marriage record before 1865 now exist.

Lucinda Menefee (1778–1879) was the first bride to have her marriage ceremony performed in the county of Giles. She was twenty-one years of age. [3]

Information on Alexander Laughlin and his family of children has been scarce. A McLauglin, believed to be Alexander was on a tax list early in Lincoln County, Tennessee.[4] Names of Laughlins in Lincoln County, Tennessee over the years have included:

W B McLaughlin who was listed among the troops that Andrew Jackson recruited. He was a vote (2,892 for - 0 against) for separation before the War Between the States, even before the state seceded and companies were formed.
W B Laughlin was also a Sheriff in 1844.
M W McLaughlin was a 1st Lieutenant in Turney's 1st TN Confederates and later rose to rank of Major, from first to close of war they were in the hottest parts of many of the battles.
Newman & McLauglin were general merchandisers in Lincoln County
E C McLaughlin ran a livery. He likely married Sallie K Logan/Caldwell who received a Confederate widow's pension.
There was a notorious fighting place nearby where Taylor & McLaughlin were merchants in Lincoln County.[5]

Alexander McLaughlin is listed as in service 7 Aug 1814 [died a few months earlier] on the Records of Men Enlisted in the U S Army Prior to the Peace Established May 17, 1815.[7]

Alexander Laughlin passed away 1814 in Giles County, Tennessee. In the March 1814 Session of the Giles County Court, it is recorded that Brice M Garner and Jared Manifee were the administrators of the estate of Alexander Laughlin, deceased. It was ordered to be entered into court minutes that the sale of the estate of Alexander Laughlin.[8] He lies in an unmarked grave.
