Biography

Luther Leeray "Luke" Lavender was born on 16 July 1928[1] in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, USA.[2][3] He appeared on the census of 14 April 1930 in the household of his parents[4], Luther Curtis Lavender and Edna Vachel Bailey, at Waco, McLennan County, Texas.[5] He appeared on the census of 19 April 1940 in the household of Luther Curtis Lavender and Edna Vachel Bailey at Waco, Mclennan County, Texas.[6]

Luther married Nell LaVern McCary, daughter of Odell McCary and Dixie Henson[4], on 24 Aug 1947.[3]

Luke died on 10 Oct. 2012[1] at McLennan County, Texas, USA, at age 84 and was buried at Stanford Chapel Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, Texas.[3] His memorial has a photo, one of his headstone and a copy of his obituary.[7]

Luther Leeray Lavender, better known as "Luke", went to be with his Savior, Wednesday evening the 10th of October, 2012. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at OakCrest Funeral Home with Dr. Ed Carter officiating. Burial will follow at Stanford Chapel Cemetery. Visitation with Mr. Lavender's family will be Saturday one hour prior to the service at OakCrest Funeral Home, 4520 Bosque Blvd.
Luke was born in Waco on July 16, 1928, to Luther Curtis and Edna Lavender. He attended Waco schools and graduated from Waco High in January 1946. Luke married his high school sweetheart, Nell Dick, on Aug. 24, 1947. They recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Following school, Luke worked for Equifax for 12 years living in Bryan. Afterwards, Luke and Nell moved back to Waco where he began his 32 year career with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company. Luke was District Manager of the Waco office.
Luke had been a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church since 1964 and a member of Dr. Ed Carter's Friendship Sunday School Class for many years. He had a strong relationship with God and always had a song of praise to sing. He was a good friend to many and offered each encouragement in a humorous way.
Luke loved his family so much. His girls, including his wife, Nell, and daughters Brenda, Laura and Linda were the light of his life. According to his daughters, Luke was the greatest Dad any girl could have.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Luther Curtis and Edna Lavender; brother, Allen Lavender; and grandson, Spencer Mangum.
He is survived by his wife, Nell; daughters, Brenda Turner and husband, Charles, Laura Snowden and husband, Paul, and Linda Friar and husband, David; grandchildren, Seth and Jenni Mangum, Steven and Sarah Mangum, and Brad and Andrea Turner; great-grandchildren, Eli Mangum, Aric Mangum and Joley Turner; brother, Wallace Lavender and wife, Jackie; sister, Mary Edna Gilbert; and many nieces, nephews, and "adopted" family.
Pallbearers will be Paul Snowden, David Friar, his nephew, Richard Dick, and his grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be his treasured friends, Bert DuBois and John Dodson, and son-in-law, Charles Turner.

The family gives many thanks to Greenview Manor Nursing Home and to Southern Care Hospice.
