I can't say if Sarah really preferred her middle name, but she was called Frances in the 1870 census. Her name was listed as Fannie in 1920 and 1930 had her as Fannie "Johnston", so I thought I'd better include that in the name sections above. (4/18/2015)
Sarah's parents were George Law and Selena Hays.
In the 1870 New Lisbon, Stoddard, Missouri US Census, Sarah was listed as Frances, 4. She had 2 older sisters, Drucilla 7, and Mary E, 9, both named for their mother's younger sisters and 1 older brother John T., 5. and 2 younger sibs, William 3 and Martha 1. All were born in Missouri, except for John T, who was born in Kentucky. Maybe that's where they went during the Civil War? Or perhaps someone died in Kentucky? One more child was born, Irena Abigail, about 1873.
Sarah's father George was killed in 1875. He'd just pulled up in the wagon when his excited children ran to greet him, spooking his horse, and toppling him to the ground. A wheel crushed his skull, leaving Selena a widow of 39 with a houseful of children.
Sarah married William Johnson August 9, 1883. Her mother Selena signed for her because Sarah was underage. Missouri birth records on-line have them listed as parents of a baby girl, Emma, born 27 October 1884, but the baby must have died because this was the only record I found of her. *Correction-Emma lived until 1899 according to a record on-line, but her name was changed to Dora Elizabeth.Juedeman-1 23:12, 3 September 2015 (EDT)
Their residence was still New Lisbon in 1900, and they were indexed in Ancestry.com as "Johson" family #175.
By 1910, they lived in Freeborn, Dunklin, Missouri , where they rented their farm. Their children were: Corlie (Coillia) my grandmother, Preston, Jim, Ella, Will Jr, Bettie, Tonie, Verdie.
In 1920, the family was in District 0077, Independence Twnshp., Dunklin, Missouri, family #255. My grandmother Corlia had married by then. William died in 1921 and Sarah moved to White Oak Twnshp. at some point between then and 1930, where she was listed next to son James and family. Even though his name is correct "Johnson" she is listed as Fannie "Johnston". Her monetary worth is only $5.
Sarah is buried in Sumuch United Methodist Church Cemetery, Holcomb, Dunklin, Missouri. Her son James was the informant. On the death certificate, he said her father was Robert Law, born in "Ind" which was probably Independence Township. However, her father was George, Robert was his brother and they both were born in Kentucky. George H. Law had died 15 years before James was born, so not odd. He didn't know her mother's maiden name or birthplace either, Selena Hays, probably born in Montgomery, Missouri, but possibly in Kentucky.
