Mary was born in 1877[1] in Grantham, Lincolnshire, England, where she lived with her family at 35 Welby Street in 1881.[2] By 1891 they had moved to 3 Guildhall Yard and Mary worked as a basket-maker.[3]
In 1899 Mary married Thomas David FINN in Spittlegate, Grantham.[4][5][6] In 1901 the couple lived at 114 Victoria Street with their baby daughter, Hilda. Thomas worked as an iron turner.[7] They had moved to number 122 by 1911.[8]
