Biography

Hugh Lawson was probably born before 1805 in Scotland, perhaps in Perthshire or Forfarshire, possibly to Peter Lawson and Barbara Morton.

Hugh married Agnes Wighton on or after 19 June 1825 in Kinnaird, Perthshire.^[1][2][3]

In 1832, when his son Hugh was born, he was a labourer at Pitmiddle.^[4]

In 1841 Hugh was an agricultural labourer living at Pitmiddle, Kinnaird with Agnes, his wife, and 5 children.^[5][6]

In 1851 Hugh was away from home visiting the Lamond family at Balloleys Farm, Abernyte.^[7][8]

In 1861 Hugh was living at Ladcrieff, Lundie in Angus with Agnes and three children.^[9][10]

In 1863, he was a shepherd at the time of his son Hugh's marriage.^[11]

Hugh Lawson died, aged 76, on 16 December 1868 at William Street, Blairgowrie, Perthshire. His occupation was given as Shepherd and the cause of death was not certified.^[12]

Research Notes

The age at death on Hugh's death entry would give him a birth year of around 1792. However, the censuses make him 40 in 1841, 46 in 1851, and 58 in 1861, giving him a birth year of between 1801 and 1805. It is possible that Hugh did not know his exact birth date, that he lowered it to reduce the age difference to his wife, or that the person reporting his death exaggerated or guessed his age. His mother's maiden name on his death certificate was given as Morton, but parents' names as reported by informants were only as accurate as their memories. There was a couple in Kettins by the names of Peter Lowson and Barbara Neish who had a couple of children around the time Hugh may have been born, but detailed research would be required to attempt to verify Hugh's possible parentage.
