Biography

Bertie was born in July 12, 1910 at New River in Scott County, Tennessee. Her head stone says she was born in 1910, her obituary has 1919 as the date of birth. She was the daughter of Samuel Lawson and Mary Etta ( Hicks ) Lawson . She married William Leslie Sexton on July 10, 1933 at Robbins in Scott County. After his death Bertie married John Ashley, she passed away on January 28,1994 in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio.

Bertha Katheryn Lawson Sexton Ashley, 83, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and formerly of Scott County, died Friday, January 28, 1994, in Cincinnati. She was born in the New River community on July 12, 1919. She was the daughter of the late Sam Lawson and the late Mary Etta Hicks. In addition to her parents she also was preceded in death by her first husband, Leslie Sexton, and her second husband, John Ashley; one daughter, Vera Jo Clearu; and one step-daughter, Ruth Williamson. She is survived by two daughters, Ruby Battles and Bertha L. Dunrell; eight grandchildren: Donna Leonard, Joy Price, Benny Battles, Toni Hunt, Jimmy Valine, Shawn and Kevin Cleary, Maureen LaCourse; nine great grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives. Funeral services were conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the West-Murley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Roger Cecil officiating. Music was provided by Chuck Duncan. Burial was in the Reed Memorial Cemetery. West-Murley Funeral Homes had charge of local arrangements (Source: The Independent Herald, 3 Feb 1994, unknown page)
