Rebecca Lay was born about 1812 in Kentucky. She married James Wilhite around the year 1829 or 1830 most likely in Whitley County, Kentucky, where some of their earlier children were born.
Rebecca was probably the daughter of "River" Jesse Lay and his wife Eleanor. Rebecca's eldest son was named Jesse and she and James left Whitley County for Campbell County in 1837, the same year as River Jesse did. The following deed also suggests a family connection.
26 Dec 1845 - In two deeds Jesse Lay Sr. sells land on Lick Fork in Campbell County, Tenn., to James Wilhite and (son) Isaac Lay. James and Isaac witnessed each other's deed.[1]
Another possibility deemed less likely is that Rebecca's parents were "Valley Jesse" Lay and Hannah his wife. Rebecca had children named Jesse and Hannah.
Rebecca died before 24 Nov 1859, when her husband, James Wilhite remarried in Cole County, Missouri. It is unknown if Rebecca died in Campbell County, Tenn., or Cole County, Missouri. Her grave has not yet been found.
