Leslie George Layman, son of John Henry and Amelia Jane (Zeigler) Layman, is found in the 1900 census at the age of 10 living with his parents and siblings in Greencastle, Pennsylvania.[1] This census is the rare instance in which a 1900 enumerator listed not just the month and year of birth but the day as well; i.e., "Nov. 10 1882". Unfortunately, however, the wrong middle initial is listed for Leslie.
Leslie married Emma Nesbitt Fairman, daughter of Charles and Rachel (Nesbitt) Fairman, in 1904. At some point, he began using his middle name, George, rather than his first name. Sometime before the 1910 census, the couple moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where George worked for a time as a lineman for the electric company. In that census he is listed as George L. Layman.[2]
George later took employment as an electrician "with a large plant in Philadelphia". Sadly, he died unexpectedly at the age of just 26, leaving Emma and their three sons - John S., Charles F., and William Leslie Layman.[3]
