Adam Lee Layman was one of twelve children of William Layman and Catherine (Hess) Layman. He married Minnie E. Hess and fathered three daughters before his untimely death at the age of 25. The daughters are: Ada Grace b. February 17, 1885; Elizabeth M. Layman, b. March 1887; and Lulu M. b. September 3, 1888. Adam was buried in Waynesboro's Green Hill Cemetery. With the loss of the 1890 census, he is not found in any census with his wife and daughters. However, he is found in the 1870 and 1880 census with his parents.

About three years after Adam's death, Minnie married Grant W. Funk. They had no children together.
