Biography

Genevieve was born on 18 September 1897 on her father's farm in Amsterdam, Botetourt County, Virginia, the third of five children and the second of four daughters of George and Mary Lydia "Lillie" Salome Moomaw Layman.
The family moved to Troutville when she was in her teens, and Genevieve graduated from Troutville High in 1915.[1] A talented pianist, she then went to Brandon Institute in Basic City.[2](near Waynesboro), Augusta County, Virginia, and then on to the noted conservatory, Peabody Institute in Baltimore, Maryland.
She returned to Southwest Virginia to teach music in White Gate, Giles County, and on 5 July 1919,.[3]when she was twenty-one, she married Joseph Graybill Kinzie Sr. at her parents' home, "The Terrace," and they lived on one of his father's farms about three miles south of Troutville..[4] Joseph and Genevieve joined the Cloverdale Church of the Brethren. Over the next few years Genevieve bore him three children, one son and two daughters. About a dozen years later, they had one more child, a third daughter. ( Dorothy L. Kinzie Weeks [1921-2013, Martha E. Kinzie Dillon [1922-2000, Joseph G. Kinzie, Jr. (1923-2003), Virginia M. Kinzie (1935- ). Although both Joseph and Genevieve had dark brown hair, three of their children and almost all of their grandchildren had fiery red hair, probably inherited through Genevieve's father, who had sandy red hair.
In the spring of 1939 Joseph's father was killed when a truck hit the wagon he was driving on Route 11. After his death, Joseph moved his family into his parents' large brick house about two miles south of Troutville on the west side of Route 11.
Joseph died of colon cancer.[5]on 24 June 1977, when he was eighty-one years old. By this time, the youngest child, Virginia, had married Cornelius "Neil" Siebren Visser, a native of Holland whose family had migrated to Brooklyn when he was two years old, and Neil and Virginia had moved from Atlanta with their two daughters back to Virginia to live with Virginia's parents In Troutville, where Neil established an accounting practice. They had a third daughter in 1973.
Twenty years later, on 11 July 1993, Genevieve died at home of cardio-respiratory arrest.[6]She is buried in Daleville Cemetery, a few miles south of Daleville in Botetourt County, Virginia.[7]
