John was born in 1815 and passed away in 1885. John and wife Polly moved to Catawba, Va. in Roanoke County in 1836. John was a prosperous planter and had a domestic servant (No record of any slaves). They lived in a log house near the road (road was from Fincastle to Blacksburg which is about 10 miles northeast of Blacksburg) and lived on land purchased by Polly's father Phillip Firebaugh. Phillip Firebaugh at his death willed (Recorded in Fincastle, va.) to Polly for her lifetime, then to her children this land. Later John bought land to the west of their farm where the current Layman home place is today. John and his two sons Phillip and William enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1864.
