Biography

John W. Layman was born in 1834 in Marion Co. WV, son of John Layman (1796–1870) and Naoma Fast (1795–1852).

John (19) married Sarah Ellen Satterfield (17) (born about 1836 in Marion Co. West Virginia, USA; daughter of Daniel Satterfield and Mary (Dicken) Satterfield) on November 9, 1854 in Marion County, VA (now WV). Their son was Sanford Layman (1863–1909). [1]

John W. Layman was drafted by the Union Army for the Civil War but it is not known yet what happened to him. He died or deserted before 1870. His family is shown scattered between Paw Paw and Marion County in the 1870 census. His wife Sarah was a domestic servant for a Floyd family in 1870.
