Biography

Thomas Layton was born about 1667 in Portsmouth, Newport, Rhode Island.[citation needed][1] [2]

THOMAS LAYTON, son of William Layton, resided at Lower Freehold, where he died in 1741, for Sept. 26, of that year, letters of administration upon his estate were issued to Joseph Williams and Peter Romeyne, of Lower Freehold, yeomen. Issue:

  1. Sarah Layton who married Joseph Williams
  2. Rachel Layton who married Peter Romyne. They had: Christopher Romyne who died 1748, and whose wife was Rebecca; Layton Romyne and Samuel Romyne.

There was a Thomas Layton who, with wife Lydia, sold land on Manasquan River to Christopher Romine, of Bethlehem, Hunterdon County, N. J., Nov. 1, 1742. Freehold, N. J., Deeds.

Estate dated 14 Sep 1740 in Lib 4 page 256. Inventory 170 pounds; incl. bonds of Christopher and Peter Romine, Anthony Pintard, Jacob Emons, Francis and John Masters; 4 negro incl a boy named Titus. Inventory by John and Thomas Layton and John Williams. John Williams and Peter Romyn admin. John Williams and Lawrence Vanclieffe fellow bondsmen. [3]
