Biography

Fulk le Strange was the son and heir of John le Strange of Blakemere (or Blackmere), Whitchurch, Shropshire, and Ankaret le Boteler.[1]

His father died in 1349 and the Inquisition Post Mortem of John le Strange recorded Fulk his son and heir both as aged 18 years at the feast of the Purification last, and also as aged 19 years.[2] [The Feast of the Purification is 02 February hence Fulk may have been born 02 Feb 1330/1331].

Fulk was recorded in 1349 having inherited the manor of 'Chalghton' in the County of Southampton from his father.[3]

A Pedigree from the Plea Rolls of Easter 49 Edward III [1375], concerning the presentation to the church of Broghton [presumably Broughton, Wiltshire], recorded Fulk as son of John, grandson of Alianora Giffard and great grandson of John Giffard.[4][5]

Marriage

11 Mar 1346/1347: Indenture made between Sir Ralph, baron of Stafford and Sir John Lestraunge of Whitchirche testifying that it is agreed between them that Fouke, John’s son between now and Whitsuntide next shall marry Elizabeth, Ralph’s daughter (who was under the age of 13 years).[6] Elizabeth was the daughter of Ralph de Stafford, K.G., 1st Earl of Stafford, by his 2nd wife, Margaret, daughter of Hugh de Audley, Knt., Earl of Gloucester. They had no issue.[1][7]

In March 1346/1347 John le Strange was given license to grant Fulk and Elizabeth the manor of Wrokwardyn.[8]

Death

The Inquisition Post Mortem of Fulk Le Straunge (see below) indicates he died in 1349.

He was succeeded as Lord Strange by his brother John le Strange.[1]

His widow Elizabeth married second John de Ferrers. knight, and third Reynold Cobham, knight. Richardson stated she died on 07 Aug 1376 [9] but her Inquisition Post Mortem suggests it was 07 Aug 1375.[10]

Inquisition Post Mortem of Fulk Le Straunge, following a Writ of 16 September, 23 Edward III [1349].[11]

He held lands in the County of Southampton, Wiltshire, Shropshire, and Gloucestershire. The Manor of Wrokwardyn, Shropshire, he held jointly with his wife Elizabeth who survived him. He died a minor in the king’s wardship.

He was stated variously to have died on Sunday after the Decollation of St. John the Baptist last; on 22 August, 23 Edward III; and on 6 September last.

His heir was his brother John, aged 17 years and 37 weeks, or aged 18 years; or aged 17 years at St. Hilary last.

Research Notes

Complete Peerage[1] incorrectly ascribed two daughters Joan and Eleanor to Fulk. However, they were the daughters of his uncle Fulk le Strange.
