Jesse (Jefferson) Lea, son of Rev Luke Lea and Elizabeth Wilson born Wilkes County, North Carolina November 30, 1777, died Amite County, Mississippi December 25, 1830, married Jefferson County, Tennessee, September 21, 1798, Elizabeth Farley daughter of Nathaniel Farley and Sarah Farley (3rd cousins), Jesse Lea first came to Amite County and St. Helena Parish in 1797 in Spanish times, but after the removal of Spanish troops and after the Indian uprisings returned to Tennessee.

He and his brother William Lea and their families came down the Mississippi River in flat boats (via Tennessee and Ohio Rivers) where Indians shot at them several times. In the fall of 1802 (son Caswell Lea was born in Tennessee 1801 and daughter Matilda Lea was born by 1803 in Amite County). Someone in their party killed an Indian soon after reaching the Amite River where Jesse Lea settled on Beaver Creek, Amite County (then Wilkinson county). The Indians became convinced Jesse Lea did the shooting and burned his barn once on account of it. There were only 20-25 families in the entire Amite County area at this time. Elizabeth Farley died in Darling's Creek, St. Helena Parish, Louisiana 1824. Jesse Lea had moved to St. Helena Parish, Louisiana from Amite County, Mississipi. Jesse Lea married his second wife in Amite County, 16 August 1825, Elizabeth Taylor Lea (50 yrs 1 w f-5 Jesse Lea-60 yrs). Jesse Lea separated from his wife after 1830 and moved back to Amite County, Mississippi, where he died in 1833. Jesse Lea and Elizabeth Farley had issue:

Jesse Lea in the 1830 census had eleven slaves. He was a founding member (1826) of the Selected Friends, U. D. Masonic Lodge of Clinton, Louisiana, chartered as #14 by the Grand Lodge of Mississippi (Reference Grand Lodge of Mississippi AF&AM 1818-1852). He was executor of the estate of his brother James Lea of Amite County, Mississippi, 28 April 1823. On May 19, 1800, James Lea of Jefferson County, Tennessee, sold Jesse Lea of Knox County, Tennessee, 250 acres in Knox County near Wallings Bridge. Luke Lea, Jr, witness (Anderson County Tennessee, Warranty Deeds A, Volume 1, Page 7, recorded 28 May 1802. Jesse Lea, Anderson County, Tennessee, on September 13, 1802, sold Stephen McCammas 100 acres in Anderson County, Tennessee, witness William Lea, recorded 9 December 1802 (Anderson County Deeds A, Volume 1, Page 37. On 8 October 1802, Jesse Lea sold Robert Sinclair 187 acres in Anderson County, Tennessee, Deed Book A, Volume 1, Page 86, witnesses Zachariah Lea and George Steel (recorded 8 December 1802). Jesse Lea patented 1896 acres in St. Helena Parish (TIS, R4E, Wash Mer Sects. 21, 24, and 25; B577, #614 and B 112) and in the census of 1830 had eleven slaves. _______________
