Biography

Robert Leach was the son of Robert and Alice Leach, of Manchester, Massachuetts Bay,[1][2] among the earliest settlers there. Robert was born, probably Manchester, Essex County, about 1653 (deposed 1 : 7 : 1673, "aged about twenty years").[3]

The genealogy noted here states he was a solder in King Philip's War 1675-78. Colonial records show a Robert Leach in Appleton's Company in 1675 and 1676[4] (look for two instances Robert Leach in 1675, and Robert Leech in 1676, on the same page).

Robert Leach served as a Manchester selectman in 1680, 1687-8, 1691, 1694, 1696, 1698 and 1700-1705.[5]

Robert Leach married (1), probably Manchester, about 1678, Sarah _____;[6][2] two children of Robart and Sarah Lech were recorded Manchester,

  1. Sarah Leach, born 11 June 1680;[7] married Ezekiel Knowlton[8][2]
  2. Robert Leach, born 28 February 1682 [or 1682/3];[9] married Mary Robinson, Elizabeth Haskins, and Elizabeth Allen[8][2]

Robert Leach married (2), by 1685 (birth of child, 1685), Hannah ______.[10][2] Eight children were recorded at Manchester to Robart/Roburt/Robburd and Hanah/Hannah Lech/Leach:

  1. Hannah Leach, born 18 November 1685;[11] married her first cousin Samuel Leach, son of Robert's brother Samuel[12][2]
  2. John Leach, born 15 January 1687 [or 1687/8];[13] married Mary Makorey and lived in Salem[2]
  3. Mary Leach, born 18 March 16901;[14][15] married Robert Haskell[12][2][16][17]
  4. Elizabeth Leach, born 8 March 1692 [or 1692/3];[18] died unmarried[2]
  5. Joseph Leach, born 4 June 1694;[19] married Patience Littlefield[12][2]
  6. Ann Leach, born 23 May 23 1696;[20] married Joseph Pitman[21][2]
  7. Paul Leach, born 11 May 1698;[22] married Rebecca Knight, Lydia Hooper and Sarah Kelley[8][2]
  8. Charles Leach, born 7 October 1702.[23]

Robert married (3), at Manchester, 13 March 1717/8, Jane Bradford,[24] the daughter of Ralph Allison and widow of both Peter Shaw and William Bradford.[25][26]

Robert Leach died, probably Manchester, between 30 March 1728, the date on which he appeared to acknowledge a deed of 1 September 1727,[27] and 1731.[28] No death or probate record appears for Robert Leach.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Robert by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Robert:

In the work to correct some of the errors in F. Phelps Leach, we severed the marriage between his father, [[|Robert Leach]], of Manchester, and Mary _____, of Charlestown. This left Mary without an associated spouse.

I plan to reject the merge I initiated (this Leach-1174 and Leach-1173), so that Leach-1173 is available. After updating Leach-1173 so that it is about Robert Leach of Charlestown, he will be attached as the spouse of Mary.

Unless there are objections, I plan to update this profile just a bit. Specifically, I will add sources and research notes. This includes some work to clarify his birth and death.

I also plan to add his marriage to Jane, the widow of William Bradford (abt.1639-1717).

Edited to add: Have completed this brief work, though much more could be added to the biography.

The birth and death dates for this Robert Leach were changed not long about from about 1650 and about 1711 to "about 1 Jan 1650" and "about Nov 1717."

Unless I overlooked something, it does not appear these changes were accompanied by sources or collaboration.

Shall we refer the recent change to birth and death dates?--Gene

I agree, this is problematic. For instance, Robert lived to at least 28 March 1728, evidence being deeds he made as "Robert, Sr." and signing distinctively with an "R." He married Mrs. Jane Bradford in 1718 and she lived to at least 1727. I have more about this at my webpage for Robert:

http://dougsinclairsarchives.com/leach/robertleach2.htm

I've seen nothing to support a birthdate "about 1 Jan 1650." Looks like one of those cryptic things that appear on the internet without explanation. I suggest a change for both the birth and death dates.

Thank you Doug,

Your work is alway so fine. And, I wonder, how did you read my mind? I thought he was Jane Allison's third husband, but the current profile would not support such a marriage.

We'll fix that. --Gene
