Biography

Richard Leach immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).

Richard Leach was baptized in Sonning, Berkshire, England, 7 February 1618/9.[1] He deposed in March 1669, that he was about 50 years of age,[2] and on 4 February 1684/5, his age was given as about 67 years.[3] He died in Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay Colony, before November 25, 1687 (probate).[4][5] and was the son of Lawrence Leach and his wife, Elizabeth Milhelm.

Richard married, presumably Massachusetts Bay Colony, by about 1645 (birth of child), Sarah _____, presumed Sarah Fuller, daughter of widow Ann Fuller.[6][7]

The nuncupative will of Anne Fuller, widow, aged 79, made probably early 1662,[8] was proved 25 : 4: 1662 [25 June 1662].[9] She named her son Richard Leach, making bequests to "Bethiah ſparrow,"[10] John Leach and Sarah Leach. Witnesses to the will were Jonathan Walcott and John Rowdon. Richard Leach was appointed administrator.[11] Inventory of the Fuller estate was returned 25 : 4 mo. : 1662; it was valued at £23 17s 6d. [12][13]

Immigration

His parents, Lawrence Leach and Elizabeth (Mileham) Leach. immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony as early as 1629. Richard is presumed to have immigrated with his parents and siblings. The family settled at Salem.[14]

At Massachusetts Bay

By a writing dated 14 December 1643, his father, Lawrence, provided that Richard should have a farm on the Ryal Side.[15] From the record,[16]

A caution for Richard Leach whoe had given him by his father--Lurrance Leach his farme on Riall side that joyneth to Jacob Barney both upland and salt marsh, only reserving for his particular use soe much as is needful during his & his wives life time, and after their decease, the said Richard Leach & his heirs forever wholly to have ye same as by a writing bearing date 14 December 1643 doth appear. Nath. Felton was witness to ye writing.

At Salem court on 27 : 6 : 1644 [27 August 1644]. Jno. Leech and his nephew, Richard, were fined 20s after Richard received a pig from John Burrage.[17]

Richard Leech received a pig of John Burrage, servant to Jno. Porter and himself, and his uncle Jno. Leech concealed it, not having it cried, until three months later. Wit: Jacob Barney. Richard and Jno. Leech fined, 20s. each.

Richard sat on trial juries, 27 : 4 : 1654,[18] 24 : 4 : 1656,[19] 26 : 9 : 1661,[20] and 26 : 9 : 1672.[21] As "Capt. Leach," on 23 August 1686, shortly before his death, his name appeared on a list of Salem men, "apoyned to bee Jury-men : being free holders ..."[22]

His uncle, John Leach, Sr., died about 1659 (he made a will in 1658, and died sometime afterward),[23][24] leaving his estate to his great-nephew, "John Leach, the son of Richd Leach."[25]

On 3 May 1665, "Rich. Leech [of] Sal[em]" was admitted a freeman and took the oath.[26]

In 1667, he was among the petitioners of Salem to the General Court for relief as to military watches, due to their distance between the town meeting house and their homesteads.[27]

"Richard Lech," aged about fifty, deposed on 30 March 1669 in the case of John and Nathaniell Ingersol v. Jacob Barne, sr.[28]

On 12 May 1675, Richard was named a lieutenant of the "second foote company in Salem"; John Pickering was named ensign. Both were to serve under Capt. John Corwin.[29] Two years later, 12 October 1677, in answer to a petition, a military company was established to serve Salem Village, and "exercised at home by Lieut. Richard Leach."[30]

In ansr to the peticon of Salem villagers for a foote company, it is ordered, that all those of the sajd village that live on the west side of Ipsuich road may be freed from Capt Corwins company, & shall ve exercised at home by Leiftennt Richard Leech, who is hereby appointed their leftennt, leaving it to the militia of Salem to bound the two companys of Salem.

On 25 June 1678, Richard was one of four selectmen of Salem to "return to the court the [names of persons] suitable ... for the keeping of public houses of entertainment. ..."[31] At the same court session, Richard, "aged about sixty years," deposed in a case concerning the late "Govr Endecots farme."[32]

According to a report dated 28 April 1679, Rich. Leech was one of six men of Salem who, together with six men of Beverly, had been appointed by the towns' selectmen to go "In perambulation" and re-establish the boundaries between the two towns.[33]

On 30 March 1683, Richard was appointed captain of the "ffoote company at Salem Village."[34]

In the case of John Norman of Salem v. Benja. Orne of Salem,[35] 4 February 1684/5, Capt. Richard Leach was sworn and deposed he was aged about sixty-seven.[36]

Will and Estate

Richard Leach's will was dated 17 June 1685 at Salem.[37] He makes various bequests.

Item. I give to unto Sarah my wife my now Dweling house with Barns Outhouses Orchard and Lands and both Upland and Salt Marsh there unto belonging to be wholy to her use and benefit during the time of her Widdowhood But in case by Gods providence the said Sarah my wife shall see cause to alter her Condition and be Marryed to another husband that then the said house and lands shall remaine unto and be possessed by my Sonn: John Leach and the heirs of his Body forever Hee paying to Sarah my wife Tenn pounds annually and what Legaryes I shall in this my will Dispose of Item I give unto my my daughter Elizabeth the now wife of Benjamin Collins tenn pounds to be paid by my exeutor in one year after my the Decese of the said Sarah my wife to yd to the said Eizabeth or to the heirs of her body. Item, I give to my daughter Mary now wife of Benjamin Ireson tenn pounds to be paid by my Executor in two years of the the Decease of the said Sarah my wife to be pait to the Mary or the heirs of her body. Item I doe give unto my Two Daughters Hannah and Rachell fforty acres of upland land more or less with Tenn acres of meadow more or less : the said Upland and c. Meadow lying between Daniel Androw's his and and the Land of John Leach Carpenter, the siad upland and meadow to be equally divided betweene the said Hannah and Rachell. Item I doe give unto my Two Daughtes, the said Hannah and Rachell all my moveagle goods as Cattle and household goods that she be remaining att the Decease of my wife after whose Death or Decease I give them unto the said Hannah and Rachel. And in case eithr ye said Hannah or Rachil Depart this Life either c. unmarried or childless then my wil is that what there is given thenm both Land and Moveable goods shall remain wholly to the Survivor: or their Children.
Item I give unyo Joseph and John Herrick (children of my Daughter Sarah) to each of them a sheepe and to their Sister Sarah Herrick a cow to be paid by Executpr after my Decease. Item I give unto young Pascho Hoote who now liveth with me That in Case the the said Pascho shall live wth me or the said sarah my wife unto the age of Twenty one yeares I give unto him Tenn acres of Land to be given him by my Executor out of his Land lyeing by Daniell Andrews his land wch if my Executor shall not there unto consent then my will is that hee shall have have Tenn acres of Land Out of the Land belonging to my Dwellling house. Item I give unto my daughter Hannah Tenn pounds to be paid her by my Executor : upon the Third year after the decease of the said Sarah my wife to be Item I give unto my Daughter Rachell 10 [pounds] to be paid to her or the heirs of her body paid unto her or the heires of her body In the fourth yeare after the Decease of the said Sarah my wife.
Item I consistute my Sonne John Leach Sole Execuutor of this my Last wil and Testament and my Loveing friend Ch_ Israell Porter and job: Swinerton overseeres. ...

Inventory of the estate 12 September 1687 estate included 100 acres upland valued at 300 pounds and 40 acres uplands valued at 60 pounds, Total 484 pounds. Debts to be paid 22 pounds, 9s and 11d. to various persons. Probate 7 December 1687, at Boston.

Family

Richard and Sarah (Fuller?) Leach were the parents of probably at least six children, perhaps seven, born or baptized Salem,[38][39]

  1. John Leach, born about 1645 (age at death), baptized 19: 9 mo. : 1648 [19 November 1648], a child of "Sister Leach,"[40] died Beverly, Essex County, 5 March 1717/8[41] or 24 March 171[7/8], "late of Salem";[42] married in Salem, 20 or 22 May 1667, Elizabeth Flint.[43] John was named executor by his father's 17 June 1685 will.
  2. Sarah Leach, baptized 19 : 9 mo. : 1648 [19 November 1648], a child of "Sister Leach"[44] died, probably Beverly, after 24 May 1674 (baptism of child);[45] married in Beverly, 7 February 1665[/6?], Joseph Herrick,[46] as his first wife.[47] Sarah's children Joseph,[48] John[49] and Sarah[50] Herrick were mentioned in her father's 17 June 1685 will.
  3. Elizabeth Leach, baptized 27 : 9 mo : 1653 [27 November 1653], "daughter of Sister Leech,"[51] died in Colchester, Connecticut Colony, about 1730;[52] married (1), probaby Salem, say 1674,[53] Samuel Putnam;[54][55] married (2) in Lynn, Essex County, 19 September 1677, Benjamin Collins.[56] She was "my daughter Elizabeth the now wife of Benjamin Collins" in her father's 17 June 1685 will.
  4. (perhaps) Richard Leach, baptized 15 : 4 mo. : 1656 [15 June 1656], "son of Sister Leach";[57] no further record; not mentioned in Richard Leach's 17 June 1685 will.
  5. Mary Leach, born probably Salem, about 1659 (assumes she was age 21 at marriage), died, probably Lynn, after 29 November 1705 (named in estate settlement);[58] married in Lynn, 1 August 1680, Benjamin Ireson.[59][60][61] She was "my daughter Mary now wife of Benjamin Ireson" in her father's 17 June 1685 will.
  6. Hannah Leach, baptized 2 : 4 mo. : 1662 [2 June 1662], "daughter of Richard Leach";[62] apparently unmarried in her father's 17 June 1685 will; no further record.
  7. Rachel Leach, baptized 7 : 3 1668 [7 May 1668], "of Sister Leech";[63] apparently unmarried in her father's 17 June 1685 will; no further record.

No known son Samuel. Richard and Sarah had no known son Samuel Leach (1655-1732). No such son is mentioned in Richard's will and no such baptismal record was found. .

Unknown name child Leech, 1665. The records of Salem First Church provide for a group of children baptized as "___", with a given name not recorded. Among those then baptized is "_____ of Sister Leech." See Richard D. The children of Richard^2 Leach (married Sarah Fuller?) and his brother John^2 Leach (married Sarah Conant) have long been confused in print and in numerous family files, in part because,

  • the baptismal records for nine children born almost certainly to one or the other brother appear in the Salem church records reporting the only parent as "Sister Le[e/a]ch." (Four additional children's baptisms mention a father's name--John/Jon or Richard.) See Richard D. Pierce, The Records of the First Church in Salem, Massachusetts, 1629-1736 (Salem, Mass. : Essex Institute, 1974), 22, 23, 25, 25, 26, 28; digital images, InternetArchive.
  • for the most part, those records were entered using old-style dates, which were sometimes converted twice--once correctly and once incorrectly, by authors (probably also in the IGI), effectively duplicating a single baptism.

Richard^2 Leach left a will, naming presumably all his surviving children. No similar record exists for his brother, John, but Roger Conant's will, 1 [March] 1677[/8], mentions Sarah (Conant) Leach's son John and four daughters, presumably including "Mary Leach" (see Roger Conant Will 1677[/8]).

Working from Richard's will and a host of other primary sources, have been able to account for the baptismal records and devise likely child lists for the brothers, with three exceptions,

  • Richard Leach, baptized 15 : 4 mo. : 1656, son of "Sister Leach." This baptism was duplicated early by Fayette Phelps Leach (1926)--wrongly dated 15 April 1656 (author reports a son of Richard), and correctly dated 15 June 1656 (author reports a son of John). There was only ONE such child baptized. Despite what Leach (1926) wrote about the son attributed to Richard, further records about the child have not been located, including that nothing was learned that would associate him as a son of Richard or John.
  • Mary Leach, baptized 3 : 7 [mo.] : 1654, daughter of "Sister Leach." This baptism was duplicated early by Fayette Phelps Leach (1926)--correctly dated 3 September 1656 (author reports a daughter of Richard), and wrongly dated 3 July 1656 (author reports a daughter of John). WikiTree reverses the record of the duplicated baptismal records. Only ONE such baptismal record is extant, but there were TWO women, Mary Leach. Both married in 1680, so they were probably about the same age. No record was located that might clarify which of the two was baptized 3 September 1654.
  • _____ Leach, baptized 27 : 1 [mo.] : 1665, child of "Sister Leech." This record appears with a group of baptisms on that date for which no given name was entered. Records have not yet been located from which we might learn the name of the child or the identity of his/her father.
