Jean was born on 14 Mar 1874 to James Leckie and Selina Leckieand her birth was registered[1][2]during the second quarter of 1874 in the district of Woolwich, Kent, England, United Kingdom.
Jean's father was a Silk and Tea Merchant. Jean was an intellectual, a horsewoman, and a lyric vocalist.
The March 1881 census[3][4]shows Jean residing with her family in The Avenue, Eltham, Kent.
The March 1891 census[5][6]shows Jean residing with her family at Glebe House, Lee, Kent.
In the Census[7]dated 31 March 1901 Jean was boarding at[8]The Ashdown Park Hotel, East Grinstead, Sussex, England with her future husband Arthur Conan Doyle, noted as a Physician and his widowed mother Mary Doyle, in the household of Joseph Robinson, a self employed Licensed Victualler and his wife Annie Robinson, in Forest Row, Sussex, England. She was aged 27. Also boarding in the household was Arthur Conan Doyle (the creator of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes). [9]
Jean, who was seventeen years his younger, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, a widower were married[10], an Author, on 18 September 1907 in the Parish Church of St. Margaret, Middlesex, England. At the time of the ceremony Jean resided in Glebe House, Blackfriars, London, England and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle resided in Old Queen Street, London. Her father James Leckie worked as a Merchant and her father in law Charles Doyle, who had passed, is noted as an Artist.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's first wife died in July 1906 of tuberculosis and had two children from this marriage: Capt. Arthur Alleyne Kingsley and Mary Louise.
Jean and Arthur had three children. The marriage was a happy one and lasted until Arthur's death in 1930.
Children: Denis Percy Stewart Conan Doyle, Adrian Malcolm Conan Doyle, Dame Lena Annette Jean Conan Doyle. None of the children had issue. [11][12]
Jean, late of[15]Windlesham, Hurtis Hill Road, Crowborough, Sussex, England (now a Care Home) passed away aged sixty eight on 7 June 1940 in Devonshire Place, Marylebone, Middlesex, England. Her passing was registered[16][17][18][19]during the second quarter of 1940 in the district of Marylebone, Middlesex. [20]under an oak tree in All Saints Churchyard, Minstead, Hampshire. Her probate[21]was administered in Llandudno, Caernafon, Wales, United Kingdom and completed ten months later on 24 April 1941 deailing effects of £47,302 2s 8d to her son Adrian Conan Doyle, of no profession, daughter Jean Bromet, a spinster and Mrs Betty Miller, a widow.
