Research Notes
An explanation of the birthdate: While the gravestone clearly says "1841," that date would put Martha in an impossible birth order -- born less than five months before her brother, Jackson. Her census records gives dates ranging from 1841 to 1846. I chose the 1844 date because it is on her very first census record for 1850. A census enumerator or an informant would see the difference between a six and a nine year old, one would hope. Since that is the closest to her birth, it seems people's memories would be clearer, as well. Until concrete documentation can be found to confirm that the date carved on the gravestone is correct, it seems 1844 is the most reasonable date to use.Hoff-1617 16:04, 30 September 2023 (UTC)
