Biography

William was born in 1642. William may have been born in Lancashire, England and, at some time after 1670, he settled in Albemarle County, Province of Carolina.

In April 1695, William Ludford is listed as a witness to a series of receipts signed by Arthur Workman in the records of Albemarle County, Carolina Province. [1]

William, or his son William, Jr., is found in 1702 in Perquimans Precinct (and including residents of Pasquotank Precinct), Albemarle County in records of tithes taken. At that time, Pasquotank Precinct extended north/south across the Albemarle Sound and included the area west of Alligator River (now Tyrrell County, North Carolina). He is listed as "Wm. Ledford" with the following neighbors, all of whom held property in the vicinity of Scuppernong River (located in current Tyrrell County): [2]

Canaan Simpson, Thomas Evans, and James Fewox, (listed immediately before William)
Obadiah Fare [Feare], John Jennett, Anthony Alexander, Cuthbert Phelps, Bart Phelps, Richard Burthingshall, William Harvey, and Roger Snell (all listed immediately after William)
Note: Canaan (Canon) Simpson was a witness for William Sr.'s will. Obadiah Fare (Feare) married William Sr.'s widow Ann.

William married Ann Young about 1670, possibly in Pasquotank Precinct, Albemarle County, Carolina Province, and they had at least one known child: Their son William Ludford aka Ledford born 1673. Ann, her son William, and two of their grandchildren are named his will dated 1 May 1702: [3]

Abstract of Will: William Ludford. 1 May 1702. Son: William. Grandson: William Ludford. To both son and grandson is given a plantation. Granddaughter: Sarah Ludford. Wife: Ann. Friend: Samuel Cooper ["now an infant at George Chambers"]. Executor: William Ludford (son). Witnesses: Godfrey Spruill, Canon Simpson and John Angely.

William's wife Ann may have been the sister of George Young, whose will is dated 12 Mar 1696-7 and was witnessed by both William Ledford, Sr. and his son William Ledford, Jr. [4]

Abstract of Will: Young, George, March 12th, 1696-7. Son Foster, daughters Ann and Mary [minors], William Ledford, Sr. wife Prothesia. Test, Wm. Ledford, Sr, Wm. Ledford, Jr.

He passed away in Albemarle County, Carolina Province in 1702.

William Ludford's Will dated May 1, 1702 - "In the name of God Amen. I William Ludford being sick of body but of sound & perfect memory praised by god, do make & ordain this my last will & testament Hereby revoking all others in manor and form following first item - 1 give & bequeath my soul to almighty God that gave it, hoping through the merits of my Savior Christ Jesus to inherit eternal life & my body to ye earth from whence or was taken to be decently buried at ye discretion of my well beloved wife & my son William whom I appoint Executer of this will..."
