Biography

William was born about 1673. [1]

William's mother Ann Young may have been the sister of George Young, whose will is dated 12 Mar 1696-7 and was witnessed by both William Ludford, Sr. and his son William Ludford, Jr. [2]

Abstract of Will: Young, George, March 12th, 1696-7. Son Foster, daughters Ann and Mary [minors], William Ledford, Sr. wife Prothesia. Test, Wm. Ledford, Sr, Wm. Ledford, Jr.

William married Christian Blount about 1697 and they had at least ten children:

William and Sarah (born before 1702 as they are mentioned in their grandfather's will), Ann, Christian, Mary, Martha, Tomson, Thomas, John, Rachel, and Johanna. The last four children likely born after 1719 as they are not mentioned in the will of Obadiah Fear (as shown below).

In his father's will dated 1 May 1702, William is bequeathed plantation land. Also mentioned in this will is his mother Ann, and two of William Jr.'s children: William and Sarah, both minors: [3]

Abstract of Will: William Ludford [Sr.]. 1 May 1702. Son: William [Jr.]. Grandson: William Ludford. To both son and grandson is given a plantation. Granddaughter: Sarah Ludford. Wife: Ann. Friend: Samuel Cooper ["now an infant at George Chambers"]. Executor: William Ludford (son). Witnesses: Godfrey Spruill, Canon Simpson and John Angely.

After his father's death in 1702, William's widowed mother, Ann Young Ludford, married Obadiah Feare. Obadiah died after June 1719 and left his estate to his wife Ann, her son William Ludford, Jr, and her grandchildren [4]

Abstract of Will: Fear, Obadiah, Alligator, Precinct of Pasquotank. June 5, 1719. [wife Ann's grandchildren] William Ludford, Jr., Sarah Ludford, Ann Ludford, Christian Ludford, Jr., Mary, Martha, Tomson, and Thomas Ludford; [Ann's son] Wm. Ludford, Sr. Exr, wife Ann Exx. Test, Edward Linington, Jasper Winshipp, And. Oliver.

William Ludford's Will dated October 2, 1732 cites his sons William, Thomas and John, and his daughters Christian, Martha, Tomson, Rachel, Sarah, and Johanna. It also cites his wife Christian [Blount] and his mother Ann [Young Ludford Feare]. [5]

His will begins: "In the name of God Amen. I William Ledford of Alligator in ye precinct of Pasquotank, and county of Albemarle do make this day my last will and testament disannulling and making null & void all other wills by me made at any time whatsoever, first I resign my soul to God that gave it to me & my body to be interned as my executors hereafter mentioned shall see fit."

Ludlow-963 and Ledford-257 appear to represent the same person because: Ludlow-963 represents a mispelling of the name of William Ledford/Ludford who was married to Christian Blount and who had daughter Christian who married Joshua Alexander.

What I read, but no proof parents were there to settle the elder estate when he was born. About marriage I have no proof that they were married there, it was posted as so by another geneologist.

Notation that all Ledford at the point of William and earlier are also noted as "Ludford" in official records.
