Biography

Calaway was born on 9 Jun 1873 in Tennessee. He passed away in Nashville, Arkansas on 26 Sep 1916 and was buried in the Nashville Cemetery, Nashville, Arkansas.[1]

1900 Census: Cal Leadford and his wife Mattie (22) are living in the Bird Township of Jackson County, Arkansas. The record notes tht Cal was 26 years old, born in Tennessee during June of 1873, and that he had been married to Mattie for 4 years. The couple have one child, Pearl (2).[2]

1910 Census: Calloway and Mattie (32) have moved their family to Nashville, Arkansas where Calloway is a barber. The record shows that Calloway was 36, born in Tennessee and that he had been married to Mattie for 7 years. The couple now have 4 children in their home: Pearl (12), Clyde (6), Melvin (4), and Wirta (1).[3]

Note

Calaway was barber in Nashville, AR. He was murdered in his barber shop on September 26, 1916, by "The wife of John Smith" of Nashville, AR, with Mr. Smith being present at the time of the murder. Both Mr. & Mrs. Smith were convicted of the murder and sentenced to five years in prison. Mrs. Smith was pardoned in November 1916 by Governor Hays to avoid the Smith's three children becoming "legal orphans". [4]
