Biography

William was born in about 1698 in Albemarle County, Carolina Province. He was the son of William Ledford and Christiana Blount. William's grandfather William may have been born in Lancashire or Dorset, England and, at some time after 1670, he settled in Albemarle County, Province of Carolina. William's father William (Jr.) was most likely born in Albemarle County. Records for William's grandfather in Carolina are found as early as 1695. [1] Therefore, given that his family had been in Carolina Province for some time before his birth, it is unlikely that William (III) was born in England as suggested by some family researchers.

In his grandfather's will dated 1 May 1702, William is bequeathed plantation land. Also mentioned in this will is his grandmother Ann, his father William Jr. and his sister Sarah. Both William and his sister were minors: [2]

Abstract of Will: William Ludford [Sr.]. 1 May 1702. Son: William [Jr.]. Grandson: William Ludford. To both son and grandson is given a plantation. Granddaughter: Sarah Ludford. Wife: Ann. Friend: Samuel Cooper ["now an infant at George Chambers"]. Executor: William Ludford (son). Witnesses: Godfrey Spruill, Canon Simpson and John Angely.
Specific bequest. "I give unto my grandson William ye remaining part of the land westward for ye aforesaid. Gum to Cannon Simson's line to him and his heirs forever with all the houses and orchards. I give unto my grandson William one large iron pot, one gun, one cross cut saw & one set of wegess".

He died TBD

Removed four children from this profile who we all born before William John Ledford III (1698-1752). Will work on putting those four "children" in their proper family.

Ledford-524 and Ledford-83 appear to represent the same person because: same parents, spouse, children (doubtful that he was born in Germany)

Wanted to bring this resource to your attention, Bob. it seems you have already found discrepancies with the England/Germany birth place:
