Biography

JASON'S MIDDLE NAME: Jason's middle initial is D. It is commonly believed to have been "David", though "Daniel" is a better guess based on the fact that he had a son named Daniel, but no David. I myself typically list him as Jason David, but for this tree I will leave it as what is known, just the initial.

JASON'S BIRTH DATE: Jason D. Ledford was born about 1800 in Burke County, North Carolina, son of Peter Ledford and Anne Tucker. There is a tombstone on his grave that gives his date of birth as 11 Oct 1798 and a newer one with just the year 1798[1]; it is unknown how the exact date was deduced. Although people use this date as fact, it should be noted that there is no date of death on the stone (the newer stone shown on Find a Grave has 1889). The date didn’t come from Peter’s Bible or all his children would have been named, and I’m sure if it were in Jason’s Bible the dates of his children’s births would have been known. (Here I will note that to date no Bibles for either Jason or Peter G Ledford have surfaced). For now, in 1810, Jason is shown born between 1800 and 1810[2], in 1820 he is listed as born between 1794 and 1802[3] – this narrows it between 1800 and 1802. In 1830 he is said to have been born between 1800 and 1810[4], and in 1840, the same[5]. In later census records they give a more exact age; 1850 age 52[6], 1860 age 60[7], 1870 age 71[8] , 1880 age 82[9]. You can see the discrepancy, I don’t think ages were terribly important to farmers in North Carolina, but the 1810 census would be the most telling as he was youngest, and there was a big difference between 10 and 12.

JASON'S DATE OF DEATH: The date of Jason's death was given in an article about Sylvester Manverse Ledford written in 1895[10]. It names all of Jason's children that lived to adulthood, where they lived in 1895, the date of Jason's death and that Betsy Bradley Ledford was still alive in 1895. (She died in 1899).

NOTES ON JASON'S LIFE: Jason stayed very close to his father throughout his life, always within a stone’s throw, and like his father, he was a farmer. Jason was married to Nancy Elizabeth “Betsey” Bradley in Haywood County, North Carolina on 22 Jan 1824[11]. They were actually on the Little Tennessee River in what would become Macon County in 1828. Betsey was born about 1808/10 in Rutherford County, North Carolina, daughter of James Bradley and Mary A. “Polly” ____. Not long after they were married, Jason and Betsey went to Monroe County, Tennessee with his brothers[12], but he was back in Macon County by 1830. They moved to Cherokee County in 1838 and lived in the Fort Hembree District near the Georgia border and Hiwassee River. The 40 acres they lived on was given to Jason by his father, and is where both he and his wife died. Jason died in 1885[10], and Betsey died in Dec 1898[13]; both are buried near Peter and Anne in the Old Ledford Chapel Cemetery. Jason and Betsy had eleven children that are known. Census records show all except Alfred, Elisha Mac and Mary M., as being Jason’s children. Those three are proven through the estate of Jason D. Ledford, which was begun in January 1899 after Betsy died.

Timeline

1800 - Jason was born in Burke County[7], North Carolina about 1800. The 1800 census for his father, Peter Ledford, Sr.[14], shows two males under ten years (1790-1800), which are Peter Ledford Jr. and Levi Ledford, and two males of ten and under 16 years (1784-1790), one being Eli Ledford, the other is uncertain. Jason was not yet born. (See profile for his father Peter G. Ledford for more information on his children.)
1810 - Jason was living in Burke County, North Carolina with his parents for the 1810 census.[2] Peter is shown on line 22 with four sons, one of 16 and under 26 years (1794-1784) the unnamed son, two of ten and under 16 years (1794-1800) Levi and Peter Jr., and one under ten years (1800-1810), Jason D. Ledford.
1820 - For the 1820 census[3], Jason was still living at home with his father in Burke County, North Carolina. This census shows Peter with only one son of 16 and under 26 years (1794-1804), Jason D. Ledford. Eli, Peter Jr. and Levi are all shown in their own households at this time.
1824 - Jason married Betsey Bradley in Haywood County, North Carolina on 22 Jan 1824.[11] It is unknown if he was in Haywood County near his brother Eli, or in what would would become Macon County in 1828.
mid-1820s - In the mid to late 1820's Jason's name appears on tax lists in Monroe County, Tennessee. Peter Ledford Jr. was also listed in Monroe County.[12] He was back in North Carolina by 1830.
1830 - Jason was living in Macon County, North Carolina.[4] He was living adjacent to his father and Lewis VanDyke, and near Henry Dryman. Dryman and VanDyke can be located near Howard's Branch of Coweeta Creek. Coweeta Lab Road goes through this area, somewhat south of Franklin. In this census, Jason is listed as age of 20 and under 30 (1800-1810). At this time he had two sons under five years and one of five to under ten years; no daughters.
1838 - Jason relocates to the newly formed Cherokee County, North Carolina.
1840 - Jason is living in Cherokee County, North Carolina.[5] This census lists Jason as age of 30 and under 40 (1800-1810) with his wife, one son of 15 and under 20 (182-1825), three sons of 10 and under 15 (1825-1830), two sons of five and under ten (1830-1835), three sons of under five (1835-1840) and one daughter of under five. Note that all early censuses that Jason appears in, through 1840, consistently have him born after late 1800.
1850 - Jason D. was still living in Cherokee County, North Carolina[6], age 52 (1798), with wife, Elizabeth, and children Eli W., Jason W., Joseph N., Merrit M., Elizabeth, Violet O. and Sarah A. In this census both Jason and Elizabeth are listed as being able to read and write.
1860 - Jasen D. Ledford is living in Ft. Hembree District of Cherokee County[7], age 60 (1800), born Burke County, North Carolina. With him are his wife Elizabeth, and children Joseph H., Nancy, Merit M., Elizabeth M., Vilet O. and Sarah A. Also living in the household were Telitha Sherman and Lena Leatherwood, relationships unknown.
1870 - Jason D. Ledford is living in Hiwassee District of Clay County, North Carolina[8] age 71 (1799), wife wife Betsey. No children listed in the household, but many are on the same page of the census.
1880 - Jason was still living in Hiwassee, Clay County[9], age 82 (1798) with his wife Elizabeth. Also in the household was Joseph Snider, who in the 1870 census was living with Edmond and Lucinda Ledford Henson.
1885 - Jason D. Ledford died sometime in 1885 according to his grandson Sylvester Manverse Ledford, whose biography was written in 1895[10]. (Towns, GA), Mary (wife of Jason Ledford; Clay, NC), Nancy (wife of Thomas Henson; Clay, NC), Lery (wife of Cicero Ledford; Clay, NC), Sallie (wife of Miles Fulbright; TN) and Matilda (wife of David Crumley; TN)

Ledford-851 and Ledford-430 appear to represent the same person because: These are the same individual, Jason D Ledford, son of Peter G Ledford. I have an added brother, Eli Ledford named as a son of Peter G Ledford in the Cherokee Pension Applications. Also a different mother (wife of Peter G) as listed in the Cherokee Pension Applications. Birth date on mine is based on the majority of censuses, though I am aware of the birth date on his gravestone.
