Biography

MRS. M. J. COLE (1933, October 21). The Dubbo Liberal and Macquarie Advocate (NSW : 1894 - 1954), p. 1. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article132947209 MRS. M. J. COLE On Friday morning Maria Jane Cole passed to her rest after a lingering illness extending over many months, during which time she was confined to the Dubbo District Hospital. The deceased lady had reached life's allotted span, being just over 70 years of age. She was the daughter of the late John Lees, born at St. Mary's, near Penrith, and was twice married. Her first marriage in 1883, was to the late John Croft, at Montefiores, and she came to Dubbo with her husband, who was in the Railway Department when the line was constructed in 1881. Three sons, Edward Joseph, and William Henry, both of Dubbo, and Eric Claude (Auburn) were the issue of that marriage. Mrs. Cole's second venture into matrimony was in 1902, with the late Amos Day Cole, who predeceased her in 1928; he also was a railway man; Surviving brothers of the deceased are Messrs. William J. Lees (Eugowra), George (Stanmore), Herbert and Wesley (Dubbo) and Ernest. (Parramatta). Her only surviving sister is Mrs. J. R. Tighe -'(Dubbo) ; the late Mrs. J. B. Garnsey and Caroline Lees having predeceased her. The late Mrs. Cole's lengthy residence of 52 years in Dubbo placed her among the band of worthy pioneers to whom the town owes so much. With her late husband and family the venerable old lady weathered the good and bad days of the early growth of Dubbo, and has left her worthy characteristics indelibly marked in the growing line of descendents. The funeral will leave the Methodist Church at 11.30 a.m. to-day.
