Katherine was born about 1504. Katherine Leigh ... [1] [2]
Genealogical Research Note:
Research shows that the Legh (aka Leigh) family were prominent in the Middle Ages in Shropshire, Cheshire and Lancashire. Sir Piers Legh (aka Sir Peter Legh) of the "Legh of Lyme" family was said to have been part of a nefarious plot that murdered Sir John Butler (aka Boetler), who had a monopoly on Ferry service on the Mersey River. Lord Standley, Sir Piers Legh and William Savage wanted to build a bridge (which would have eliminated the lucrative ferry income). The story is that they conspired and murdered Sir John Butler and his wife in Bewsey Hall, their seat, Lancashire. This happened in 1463. Nearby was "Bryn Hall" also known as "Bryn & Kingsley" in Lancashire. St. Oswald's church at nearby Winwick has a chapel dedicated to the Legh family. The Gerards were a well-known Lancashire family called "Gerards of Bryn" in the Middle Ages.
All of this suggests that "Bryn" of Katherine Legh's birth was in Lancashire.[3]
Another online site suggests the Legh family originated in Norway ("Katherine [Legh] was born in 1512, in Bryn, Oppland, Norway").[4]
Still another suggests that the town of "Y" where she died was in Picardie, France.
