Biography
Eliza Leigh was born in 1809, the daughter of Thomas Leigh and Elizabeth neé Briggs. She lived with her parents in Erith, St. Ives, Huntingdonshire, England.
She married Reverend William White on 30 June 1829 in Bluntisham, Huntingdonshire, England.[1] She was 15 years his junior.
Her husband was a Wesleyan Minister who had been stationed in New Zealand. They returned to New Zealand together where they had two sons; John Ebenezer and Thomas Leigh. Three babies had been lost before John's birth in 1834.
In 1845 Eliza White took refuge in Auckland during the northern war. She took a prominent role in religious and charitable movements, becoming president of the Ladies' Christian Association.
Her husband died in 1875.
Eliza passed away in 1883 at the age of 73.
