Thomas Leighton was born to Thomas and Joanna (Silsby) Leighton in about 1642. He died 31 Oct. 1677[1] NOTE: This appears to be an error or transposition of the date by the book's author, because Thomas would have died before administration of his estate was granted on October 13, 1677.[2] A court order was filed on October 31, 1677 providing an increased allowance for Thomas' son, Thomas, then in Lieut. Anthony Nutter's care.[2] Another source reports just that he died at Dover, intestate in 1677. It also says his estate was inventoried 29 Oct. 1677, and that administration was granted to Elizabeth Layton, Philip Cromwell and John Tuttle 31 Oct 1677. On June 25, 1678, at the widow's request, Lt. Peter Coffin and Mr. Fryer were appointed additional administrators.[3]
On 13 Feb. 1670, the same day that his father deeded him a house and land, Hatevil Nutter deeded him a 40-acre lot between Oyster River and Back River (NHPD, 3:58); these deeds were probably marriage gifts. His drafting of a will six years before he died suggests his health had been poor.[3]
He took the freeman's oath 25 June 1672 (NHSP, 40:277), served as constable in 1673 (40:290) and as juryman in 1676. His estate was inventoried 29 Oct. 1677 at more than 515 pounds (NHPD, 5:20-26; NHSP, 31:186).[3]
When Hatevil Nutter made his will 24 Dec. 1674, he did not mention his daughter Elizabeth, indicating that she was then dead (NHSP 31:157-9). Julia Cornman made a conjecture that Thomas's second wife may have been born a Tuttle, perhaps because John Tuttle was a co-administrator of the estate.[3]
Thomas married first Elizabeth Nutter, born abt. 1646, married abt.1670, died before 24 Dec 1674.
Thomas and Elizabeth (Nutter) had the following known children:[2]
Thomas married second Elizabeth (Unknown), after 1674.[2][4] Thomas and Elizabeth (Unknown) had one known child:
