Disputed Parents

In Genealogical and family history of the state of Maine it says: "Francis Small [...] In 1657 he resided in Dover, New Hampshire, and had a wife named Elizabeth (nee Leighton)." [1] In the same book it talks about an Elizabeth Leighton who was the daughter of Thomas Leighton. The daughter of Thomas did not marry Francis Small but married (first) Philip Cromwell and (second) Philip Chesley. [2]

Per this source,[3] Elizabeth Leighton is not the daughter of Thomas Leighton and Joanna Silsby. Another source stated that "about 1650 or 1651, Francis Small married Elizabeth _____: mentioned by Mr. Charles W. Tuttle as Elizabeth Leighton, who was born according to Francis Small's deposition in about 1634." No evidence is presented to show the source of her last name at birth.[4]

In summary, no sources have yet been found to show that Thomas Leighton and Joanna (Silsby) Leighton were Elizabeth's parents. If there are sources for this information, please add it to Elizabeth's profile.

Biography

Elizabeth was born in 1634 based on a deposition she made on on 6 April 1685 "...Elizabeth Smale aged about fourty nine yeares."[5] "Her maiden name may have been Leighton."[6][7] The Descendants of Edward Small gives her surname as Leighton per Charles W. Tuttle of the Massachusetts Historical Society, but provides no additional source.[8]

Francis Small married Elizabeth ______ about 1650 at Kittery, Maine, or at Dover, Falmouth, or Portsmouth, New Hampshire.[9]

According to Torrey, she lived at least until 1712.[9]

Research notes

While searching for information/proof/sources for her death, it is interesting to note that there is no record in the Vital Records of Truro, MA. There is a listing at Find A Grave Memorial #160728486, however there is no indication of any source for that memorial - i.e., no gravestone, etc. Have attempted contact with the contributor on FAG. There has been no response after many months.[12] Also have checked the gravestone records made in 1897, and no stones were then extant for either Elizabeth nor Francis.[13] [14] Elizabeth & Francis not found.

My personal opinion is that the marriage date should be aligned with what is said in the Desc. of Ed. Small, that they married about 1652 or 1653. The son Edward's birth is probably set too early, and should be closer to that of his next sibling. The Small Gen, p. 110, says 1652-1653 for his birth, too. If that were the case, Elizabeth would have been about 18 at marriage.

Are there any sources for her LNAB of Leighton? It appears that her last name was unknown. She certainly was not the daughter of Thomas Leighton and Joanna Silsby.

Are there any objections to changing her last name to Unknown and including Leighton (Uncertain) as an Other Last Name?

Could this at least represent a 'clearing of the brush', as it is likely that a few of these Elizabeth Leightons are the same person?

According to "New England Marriages Prior to 1700" I have Francis Small Marrying Elizabeth ? in 1650 in Kittery, Maine.

Merging has made something of a mess of this. It seems unlikely that Elizabeth was born in Maine in 1634, and less likely that she married there at eleven years of age.

Hey, Steve,

Can we merge some of these obvious duplicates of Elizabeth Leighton?
