Biography

John was born in about 1803 in Clerkenwell according to the 1861 census. He was the son of George Leighton of Vineyard Gardens, according to his indenture of apprenticeship. His mother was Abigail Egleton.

On the 1st October 1817 John Leighton began an apprenticeship with Edward Barnard. The indenture certificate reads This indenture witnesseth that John Leighton, Son of George Leighton of Vineyard Gardens Clerkenwell in the county of Middlesex bookbinder doth put himself apprentice to Edward Barnard of Paternoster Row London, Silversmith, a citizen and Goldsmith of London, to learn his art as a silversmith. [1]. Edward Barnard was a relative by marriage but the Barnard family were also members of the Sandemanian Church.

John married Matilda Deacon in about 1826 with the Marriage Banns being read on 8th January, 15th January and 22 January [2]. They probably married on about 29th January 1826.

Their marriage is listed on London Sandemanian Marriages and other links between church members. There were about 70 marriages between the families of the London Sandemanian's of which this was one.

In 1841 John Leighton was 35 years old, living with Matilda (aged 35) and 5 children at Woodbridge Street North, St James Clerkenwell. Also living with him was Vincent Chater (15) and Thomas Barker (15), who may have been apprentices. [3]

In 1851 he was 47, living in Shepperton Street, Islington with his wife Matilda (45) and 9 children. He was working as a silversmith journeyman[4]

In 1861 he was 57 years old, living with Matilda (55) at Frederick Street, St Pancras, Middlesex with 4 children and his nephew. He was an Electrotypists master by profession [5].

John died on 13 May 1869 at 53 Norfolk Rd, Essex Rd, Islington, London, UK.
