Why did William James,Sophia Mary,Frederick George and Caroline Rhoda Lester come to New Zealand?

First of all, their Father William Herman LESTER died on June 7th 1872.His wife,Rhoda(Gifford),died on September 2nd 1874. Times were tough, friends and relations were heading to NZ -promises of free land, gold, plenty of work-and no reason to stay. Giffords were all ready in Nelson-arrived 1842-so were the Clutterbucks-via Australia-and there were other Lesters living in Nelson. Nothing by chance. So they signed on,packed up and after a bit of "official mischief"where they were nearly not allowed to board the "Hannibal"-had to come out as single men and woman ,rather than as a family(parents were DEAD)-they were on the way. Their older sister Adeline stayed in England, with her children.

James and Lydia were the first people to "drive" down the Matakitaki River to their land at the 10 mile. They had travelled from Nelson,on their Honeymoon1878,by horse and trap. This journey went up the Tutaki valley to Hunter's station, along the Matakitaki river to Whore's Terrace and the Glenroy River then it was off road.It took 3 long days of bouncing over the boulders on the river beaches, risking capsizing while climbing over the stumps of the trees Jim had cut down to make a track, negoitiating creekbanks, climbing up to the terraces. In many places the bluffs/terraces stopped them in their tracks so they floated down the middle of the river, with all their worldly goods,in the dray behind a swimming horse.Lydia never left the homestead for the next decade(wonder why?).It was only a 3 day walk to Murchison-70km via Tutaki-even though it was only 8 miles away downstream.

In 1886,the Inangahua council decided the 6 Mile was"adequately settled"to need a dray road. The budget was 940 pound=$1880 It was 1907 before this track got to the mouth of the Glenroy River.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:
